Great American String Band, 1974

This post is two shows from The Great American String Band. Another Jerry Garcia side project. It only lasted a short time in this configuration. I can only find seven documented shows that they played. This appears to be a continuation of the Old And In The Way idea with Garcia on banjo and Grisman on mandolin. This band then eventually morphed into the first configuration of the David Grisman Quintet. Already at this point they are doing several songs that would be some of the David Grisman Quintet's standards.

100,000 visitors

There have been 100,000 visits to my blog. I'm sure in that over 100,000 visits many are just the same people who have visited many times over the last several month. Well thanks to those who have come and enjoyed what I enjoy. The most visited page on my blog to my surprise is the post on West Clear Creek Wilderness. Posts with the Allman Brothers and the Grateful dead are in the top 10 as well as Los Lobos. Number five on the list is the Post on Rick Griffin Artwork. Posts of Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis are also in the top ten. So my viewers have a wide variety of interests, just like I do. The outdoors, rock music, art, and even some of my spiritual pontifications.

If you are one of the only 19 people who singed up to be a "follower" of this blog you will find that I have sent a message to you via Blogger that contains a gift of my favorite Van Morrison bootleg. Van gets uptight about posting his stuff so it will not be on the blog.

Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders, 7-10-1973

Here is yet another great Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders show. This one has some really hot versions and the sound quality is fantastic. Should I stop yet? I still have several more from this era. Jerry and Merl were on fire back in those days. Just think how hot Jerry was playing with the Grateful Dead during this same period.

Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders, 1-19-1973

Here is another Jerry Garcia and Merle Saunders show. This one has Sara Fulcher on vocals in some places and has some rare songs. If you like early '73 Garcia/Saunders, and especially Sara Fulcher's vocal stylings, you'll love this. It has lots of super-rare Fulcher-dominated tunes here. And the sound on this is very good!

Here is another side project that Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead was involved in in the early to mid seventies. It is a blugrass band called Old And In The Way, with the great Vassar Clements, Peter Rowan, and David Grisman. I have posted some shows of this band before. Jerry Garcia & Merl Saunders, 7-03-1973

Here is another of the Jerry Garcia side projects. This one is under the name of Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders. This is a long one with close to three hours of music. The second set on this one gets way out there with a 20 minute My Funny Valentine followed by a 10 minute Finders Keepers (my favorite), with an unknown trumpet player adding to the fun. When you look at what Garcia was doing with the Grateful Dead at this time and add this to it, you just have to wonder how it was possible that anyone could produce this much. Again it is a real fine soundboard recording.

Jerry Garcia with Legion Of Mary Band, 4-19-75

Legion Of Mary Band was just one of the many names of the projects that Jerry Garcia was involved with on the side when not doing the Grateful Dead. Durring the period between 1973 and 1975 Garcia was involved with, Old And In The Way, Great American String Band, Legion Of Mary Band, Garcia and Saunders, and Jerry Garcia Band. This is a very fine soundboard recording. This is the first of a series of several (eight or nine) Garcia side projects I am going to post from this time period in the near future.

Louis Armstrong is one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. To me this is one of the best bootlegs ever. It is a piece of history. The sound is really good for how old it is. It is amazing. I guest it was recorded for a radio broadcast.

Dizzy Gillespie, 1-32-92

Dizzy Gillespie
The Blue Note
New York City, NY.
1-31-92
Soundboard

Dizzy Gillespie was featured at the Blue Note in New York for a month during this period, virtually at the end of his playing career, He was 74 at the time. His supporting cast for this run of shows (heard from in different combinations) includes such major players as altoists Jackie McLean, Antonio Hart and Paquito D'Rivera and tenors Benny Golson, Clifford Jordan and David Sanchez, in addition to a strong trio led by pianist Danølo Perez.

Personnel during this run of shows :Paquito d'Rivera (Clarinet), Paquito d'Rivera (Sax (Alto)), Dizzy Gillespie (Trumpet), Antonio Hart (Sax (Alto)), Danølo Perez (Piano), Kenny Washington (Drums), Lewis Nash (Drums), Charles Fishman (Producer), Benny Golson (Sax (Tenor)), Clifford Jordan (Sax (Tenor).

I have seen three different released from this run of shows and none of them have tracks the same lengths as these so I'm pretty sure this is not released.

This did not come with a song list. If anyone knows Dizzy and could help that would be great.

Mountain Biking in Sedona, AZ

I live 20 minutes from Sedona and I have mountain biked there many, many times. I have been riding there frequently since the late 90s. I went there just last weekend and the weather was a perfect 72 degrees. The trails in Sedona are very nice and the scenery is amazing, I'm talking truly amazing. So I decided to share some information about this great place to mountain bike. Sedona has trails all around it, in fact you can almost ride around the whole city on trails except for a few places that are wilderness and they don't allow bikes. The trails are well maintained and well marked in most cases. The trails have a wide variety of difficulty level. In some places it will be smooth and easy going but in many cases there are some difficult and technical sections. Most of the technical sections are short and if it is beyond your skill you can just walk that part and be back on your bike riding primo trails again in no time. The Sedona trail system has in my view four main parts. They are the south, north, central, and the west areas. There are some areas not included in these four main parts, but for ease of discussion I will exclude them. My favorite is the south area followed by the north area, but it is all good. In this post I will talk about the north and south parts and deal with the others at another time. I have pieced together a few maps to help out. They were partial areas and had some inaccurate info so I tried my best to improve them.
The south part is from Munds Mountain Wilderness on the east side to Oak Creek and from Morgan road and Broken Arrow trail head in the north south to the Village of Oak Creek. This area of trails divided in two by highway 179. There are two places where you can go under the highway bridges or in a tunnel that connect the areas. Running north and south through this area parallel to the highway is the Redrock Pathway, and many of the trails branch off from it. The Redrock Pathway is a wide foot and bike path that starts at the Courthouse Butte parking area and goes north terminating at the Little Horse Trail Head parking area. The Redrock Pathway is reasonably smooth (by Sedona standards) and is wide so people traveling in both directions can pass with ease. It is a good place for beginners to try mountain biking for a first time. No technical skill needed at all. The main trails that branch off the Redrock Pathway are the Llama Trail and the Little Horse Trail on the East side and the Templeton Trail and the HT trail on the west side.
The Templeton Trail branches off the pathway just north of what is called "Baby Bell" (a small rock butte just north of the much larger Bell Rock) and heads west and then goes under the highway and then takes you to Cathedral Rock. The trail skirts along the north flank of this ridge that contains Cathedral Rock and then leads you to Oak Creek then goes south along the creek and eventually to world famous Red Rock Crossing. I love this trail for it's scenery and I love a part that travels for a time on a nice rock ledge contouring to the terrain around the base of Cathedral Rock. It is very cool. Along the way you pass the Cathedral Rock Trail coming up from the Cathedral Rock trail head and heading up to the saddle of Cathedral Rock. Once at Red Rock Crossing you can cross the creek and head into the central part of the trail system that takes you to what is called West Sedona or you can complete a loop around Cathedral Rock by taking Verde Valley School Road back into the Village Of Oak Creek and Highway 179. Or you can go south into Redrock State Park and to more trails.
The HT trail branches west off the Redrock Pathway near the north end of the pathway. It too goes under the highway and then connects to the Templeton Trail and helps make loop rides happen that can include parts of Templeton Trail. There is also a trail that heads south from the intersection of HT trail and Templeton Trail that is somewhat new that goes all the way to The Village Of Oak Creek on the west side of the highway. This new trail is very cool and helps make for some new longer loop ride opportunities. This photo is taken from that trail west of the highway and Bell Rock, looking out to the northeast toward Elephant Rock and the Twin Buttes Branching off to the east side of the Redrock pathway is the Llama trail. This trail branches off to the east just north of Courthouse Butte. There is a major intersection on the pathway where a trail that circles Courthouse Butte heads east. You take this and after a short way the Llama Trail splits off to the left heading northeast. You cannot take a bike on the Courthouse Trail around the Butte because it is in a wilderness area so you must turn off at the Llama Trail before the Wilderness boundary. Llama Trail was started by a guy that did Llama tours years ago and then was found by mountain bikers. The Forest Service did not really maintain it or recognise it as an official trail for quite a long time. When I first started riding it 13 years ago it was little used and narrow. Now it is quite well traveled and wider like most Sedona trails. This photo is a typical view along the Llama trail looking east to what I guess would be Lee Mountain in the Munds Mountain Wilderness. The Llama trail skirts along the west border of the Munds Mountain Wilderness heading north and eventually intersects the Little Horse Trail .
The Little Horse trail branches east off of the Redrock Pathway near it's north end and heads up to a pass between some large mountains called Chicken Point. It travels just south of two large and impressive spires of rock called the Twin Buttes (also called two sisters). The trail leads you up to a pass between the mountains called Chicken Point. Chicken Point is a large area of flat slickrock at the north east base of the Twin Buttes with a steep drop off on the south side. This has great views off to the south and west and the jeep tours take people out here. This is what it looks like just east of Chicken point looking west at the east side of the Twin Buttes. This old dude on an old classic Ibis bike is me AZ Jones on the slick rock at Chicken Point. At this point there is a trail at the west end of the slick rock area that heads north along the base of the mountain called Elephant Rock. You just follow the rock stack markers. Don't take the jeep roads. This trail is called Broken Arrow Trail. Broken Arrow Trail has great views across an unpopulated valley to Munds Mountain and the Devils Dining Room. The Broken Arrow Trail takes you north to the Broken Arrow trail head at the end of Morgan Road. There is a short side trail that leads down into the valley to a large exposed rock area called Submarine Rock that is fun to freelance all over.
The north area of trails in Sedona is divided into two parts by Oak Creek. East of the creek are the Huckaby Trail that That goes from Schnebly Hill road parking area down to the creek under Migley Bridge and the majority of it is downhill. But once at the creek there is a steep climb up out of the canyon to get the the road and parking area at Migley Bridge. East of the Schnebly Hill parking area is the Munds Wagon Trail. This trail runs parallel to Schnebley Hill Road and ends up at an area called The Carousel. This is uphill most of the way with a few crossings of a wash and a few crossings of the road. You could have someone drop you off at the top and ride downhill and continue on Huckaby all the way to the Oak Creek. It would be a fun downhill run. Part way up the Munds Wagon Trail is a side trail to the north that leads out to some large flat areas of rock called the Cow Pies. This is a fun place to just goof around. like a giant skate board park for bikes but with world class views. At the north most of the Cow Pies there is a trail that heads west along a ledge in the rocks out to a saddle and then drops over the saddle and down to Oak Creek and comes out at Grasshopper Point in the canyon. This photo is taken from the Cow Pies looking at the saddle. This trail to the saddle and down the other side is called Hangover Trail. It can be difficult to follow and has some very difficult and technical sections that should be tried by advanced riders only. There is some serious exposure in some spots on this trail.
The other half of the North area of Sedona trails is west of Oak Creek. This part has a trail called the Thompson Trail that starts at Migley Bridge heads north and then southwest along the base of Steamboat Rock. Steamboat rock is a prominant rock formation at the base of the large mass of Wilson Mountain. This photo is of Wilson mountain as seen looking northeast from the Jordan Trail. The Thompson Trail follows an old wagon route that Jim Thompson an early homesteader used to take supplies up into Oak Creek Canyon. The Thompson trail goes from Migley Bridge at one end to the Brins Mesa Trail Head Just Northwest of the older or uptown part of Sedona. You cannot take the Brins Mesa Trail (that heads north) because it heads into wilderness areas where bikes are not allowed. Instead you continue from there west on The Jordan Trail into an area that the locals call the Secret Trails. The Jordan Trail will take you over the Soldiers Pass Trail Head and Coffee Pot Rock. This is a typical scene olong the Jordan Trail looking west toward Coffee Pot Rock. The Secret Trails area has several side trails and many wind up in the bottom of a wash and into a maze of bootleg trails that can be confusing. This is a photo looking north from the Secret Trails area. Once over at the Soldiers Pass Trail head there is another trail that heads west called the Tea Cup Trail that takes you out west at the base of Coffee Pot Rock and up to Sugarloaf and the Little Elf Trail Head. From here you can continue west out past Chimney roch and Lizard Head Rock and out to the western area of trails that I will cover in another post.

These guys usually are not doing acoustuc stuff. So I thought this was interesting to give a listen to. Very transparent and real lyrics of soul searching, failing and grace.

John Scofield, two shows, one with Pat Metheny

Here are two shows featuring the very fine guitar work of John Scofield. The first one also has Pat Metheny making for some nice interplay. The second ones has Eddie Harris on Sax and some cool groves laid down by Idris Mohammed on drums. If you like jazz guitar this is some top notch stuff. Both shows are either radio broadcasts or soundboards.

Grateful Dead, with Etta James, The Tower Of Power, 12-31-82, A Better Mix!

The Grateful Dead With Etta James and The Tower of Power on New Years Eve. There are also guest appearances by Matthew Kelly and John Cipolina. The source for this is my master tape from the radio broadcast. I feel this is superior to the soundboard recording that is common. There is not the drop out of Etta James voice during Tell Mama, and the mix for me is better with Garcia's guitar more up front and louder in the mix. It also has some crowd noise that adds to the "New Years" feel. Of course in some cases the soundboard might be better. perhaps at the strat of sugar Magnoilia where the stupid DJs are talking. But overall I feel this is far superior to what is found on Archive.

Another opportunity to do something of value

Well it's Thanksgiving and most of us as a nation have a lot to be thankful for, even in tough economic times like these. So here is another opportunity to do something of value (not just a Christian opportunity. . . . . don't want to go there) and here is why you should help.

More than 1 billion people live in absolute poverty.
500 million people are at the edge of starvation.
200 million children are being exploited as laborers.
Half of the human beings on the planet live on less than $2/day.
1.5 billion people do not have enough money to buy food.

For those who are Christian or have a Christian set of values.
So what is a follower of Christ called to do according to the Bible?
Ephesians 2:10 "For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them" So we are made to do "good works". What would these "good works" look like? John the Baptist who Jesus called the greatest of the Prophets said In Luke 3 that unless you bear "good fruit" you will be cut off from the branch. What did "good fruit" look like to John? He said in Luke 3:11 "He who has two coats, let him give to him who has none, and he who has food , let him do likewise."

What does God promise to those who help others by giving? God says TEST ME!
Malachi 3:10-12) "Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it. {11} I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not cast their fruit," says the LORD Almighty. {12} "Then all the nations will call you blessed, for yours will be a delightful land," says the LORD Almighty." It is the only place in the bible where it says to test God.

“Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." (Luke 6:38)"

So here is a great place to help people who need a hand up to get to a place where they can help themselves.

It is called Kiva. Kiva's mission is to connect people, through lending, for the sake of alleviating poverty. How it works is you loan money to someone who can't get a conventional loan so they can start a business and help themselves get out of poverty. http://www.kiva.org/about/

Kiva works and is low risk. As of November 2009, Kiva has facilitated over $100 million in loans at a repayment rate of 98.95%.

Kiva was born of the following beliefs:
•People are by nature generous, and will help others if given the opportunity to do so in a transparent, accountable way. (THAT'S YOU)

•The poor are highly motivated and can be very successful when given an opportunity.
(THAT'S THEM)

•By connecting people we can create relationships beyond financial transactions, and build a global community expressing support and encouragement of one another. (THAT'S US)

Kiva partners with existing microfinance institutions around the world (they call them Field Partners). These organizations have expertise in microfinance and a mission to alleviate poverty facilitate Kiva loans on the ground. These Field Partners know their local area and clients and do all the leg work required to get Kiva loans to the entrepreneurs posted on Kiva.org.

Lenders browse loan requests and select which ones they'd like to fund. Lenders can fund as little as $25 and as much as the entire amount of the loan. To help streamline the loan transaction process, loan requests posted by the Field Partner are rounded up to the nearest $25 increment. Kiva aggregates funds from Kiva lenders and provides them to the Field Partner.

The Field Partner collects repayments from Kiva entrepreneurs as well as any interest due and lets Kiva know if a repayment was not made as scheduled. Interest rates are set by the Field Partner, and that interest is used to cover the Field Partner's operating costs. Kiva doesn't charge interest to its Field Partners and does not provide interest to lenders.

If there is already money in the Field Partner's account, or once their payment is received, Kiva uses these funds to credit the appropriate lenders with their loan repayments. Lenders can re-lend their funds to another entrepreneur, donate their funds to Kiva (to cover operational expenses), or withdraw their funds via PayPal.

Kiva is Global and it helps those who can't get help in other ways
81.82% of Kiva loans have been made to women entrepreneurs who are often in male dominated societies where help would not be available.

Here is an example of what Kiva does

Pendo Luisi from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
PENDO, age 27, was a kindergarten teacher until she had her second child 9 months ago. Seeing that her teacher’s salary would not be enough to support her household, which includes her younger sister, 2 children, and an assistant, she left teaching and began selling merchandise door-to-door. She sells new handbags, shoes, bed sheets, and fabrics, and makes about $10-$14 a day from this trade. From the profits, she opened a small snack shop 3 months ago and now hires a shop assistant so that she can continue selling door-to-door. The shop brings in a profit of around $3-$5 a day. With her savings and a new loan, Pendo hopes to open a new business, a cafĂ©.

Pendo belongs to the group Dhahabu (Swahili for “gold”), which consists of 36 other members who keep each other accountable and insure one another in paying back their loans.

Her loan amount was $175.00 and she paid it back in four months.

Once you get paid back you can just help someone else (the gift that keeps giving and giving).

David Nelson Band, 6-25-09

Here is a good 2009 David Nelson Band recording. As I said before David Nelson was a founding member of the New Riders Of The Purple Sage and a long time friend of Jerry Garcia and he brings that style to this effort. If you like the Grateful Dead, David Nelson Band has some of the same elements. Barry Sless often has a Garcia like sound in his guitar phrasing and they jam out songs like the Dead. The seveal songs including All You Need Is Love and Into The Mystic jammed out and linked together out of Fable Of The Chosen One and then returning to Fable Of The Chosen One is worth a listen.

Here is another fine recording of Alison Krauss and Union Station. This is an early one in which Alison is just 18 years old at the time of this recording. This is most likely a soundboard even though it did not come with that information. It sounds real clear and clean. The early Union Station group with Jeff White on guitar is pretty strong.

Alison Krauss and Union Station, 11-23-04

This is a radio broadcast of Alison Krauss and Union Station. It has some radio static and noise but still beats an audience recording in my opinion. Anyway there are some nice moments to be sure with Jerry Douglas and Dan Tyminski. My favorite Alison Krauss lineup. Someone out there has to have a better recording of this. But until that surfaces this will have to do.

Paria River Canyon

Here are some photos from a recent trip to Paria River Canyon on the Arizona-Utah border. I already posted about this area but thought people might like some more. This time when I went down the canyon there had been some rain and it was real muddy and the water flow was much deeper than I have experienced. Even still I made it down to the confuence of the Paria River and Buckskin Gulch. From White House trailhead to the confulenec and back took me more than six hours and It was tough going. Slippery and muddy and wet. 14 plus miles total. This is a fantastic canyon that gets very tight and very tall. As you strart down stream from the trail head at first the rocks on eack side are far apart and not very tall This time there was much more water than I have experienced before. In the past the stream has been very low flow and the soil around it has just been dry sand. This time there was mud, and lots of it. As you go farther down stream you can see the cliffs start to get much bigger.
The hight of the cliffs at first will get large and then decrease and then get large again. And the distance between wil tighten and then widen intermitantly. But soon the cliffs get much closer together as you go and they stay that way. It is around 3 to 4 miles before the first real narrow sections. Pretty soon the cliffs are huge, towering hundreds of feet up and close together shutting out all but just reflected light.
In some places the cliff walls only 15 feet across with cliffs that are several hundred feet high on both sides. This time because of the water flow the water was wall to wall in many locations. Most of the time the water depth was about knee high. But being cloudy it was hard to tell where deeper holes were.
As you get to the confuence with Buckskin Gulch, it gets real tight and dark. This next one below is the slot canyon of Buckskin Gulch coming in from the side into the Paria River Canyon. I read that the cliffs are 400 to 500 feet tall in some locations and I don't doubt it. This next one is looking from inside Buckskin Gulch out to where Paria River Canyon meets it. This last one is looking from the confluence of the two canyons back into the Paria River slot that is the way back.
This is a fantastic canyon. I'm telling you that a camera just can't get the job done. Or at least if I'm in control of the camera. You just have to see it. The White House trail head has only five camp sites that are on a first come first serve basis. So you are lucky if you get to camp at the trailhead.
