Grateful Dead, Madison Square Garden, New York, NY, 3-09-1981 (SBD)

Here is an amazing Grateful Dead show from the early 80s.  Garcia sounds great on this.  Honestly you need to hear this.  One of those nights where Garcia just lights it up.  This is why I say, anything without Garcia is not the Grateful Dead.

U2, the Christian Band that does not want the label

Listen TO THIS!
One, U2, 10-25-2001

I saw Pastor Bill Hybels from Willow Creek Church interview Bono at a leadership conference and Bill asked Bono about if Bono and U2 were Christian. Bono said he didn't like labels and did not want to be placed in with what he saw of Christianity today (I can't blame him). But labels are not how we know if someone follows Jesus. It is if they believe that He died for our sin. It is if we walk out our lives by following His example of sacrifice for others. Here are some quotes that tell me what Bono is. Bono understands Jesus died for our sin. "The point of the death of Christ is that Christ took on the sins of the world, so that what we put out did not come back to us, and that our sinful nature does not reap the obvious death. That’s the point. It should keep us humbled… It’s not our own good works that get us through the gates of Heaven."   Bono understands salvation comes by grace and not by our own works. "And yet, along comes this idea called Grace to upend all that “as you reap, so will you sow” stuff. Grace defies reason and logic. Love interrupts, if you like, the consequences of your actions, which in my case is very good news indeed, because I’ve done a lot of stupid stuff.  I’m holding out for Grace. I’m holding out that Jesus took my sins onto the Cross, because I know who I am, and I hope I don’t have to depend on my own religiosity."  Bono understands that Jesus is not a "good teacher" but is actually God. "Christ says, No. I’m not saying I’m a teacher, don’t call me teacher. I’m not saying I’m a prophet. I’m saying: “I’m the Messiah.” I’m saying: “I am God incarnate.” "And people say: No, no, please, just be a prophet. A prophet we can take."
So Bono is a follower of Christ by words and his time sacrificed on causes to help others shows he is a follower of Christ by deeds as well. But is U2 a Christian band? Well three of the members of U2 met and started out in a church youth group. They may have left organized religion but they have never left their faith. They start each show by praying together. The music is full of biblical quotes, references, and ideas. In fact 40 is essentially Psalm 40. Here are some lyrics from I Still Haven't Found What I Am looking For
"You broke the bonds, Loosed the chains
Carried the cross, Of my shame, Of my shame
You know I believe it,
But I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For"
It appears that Bono believes that Jesus freed him from sin and died for his sin but is unsatisfied due to what he sees in other Christians and in the world. There are just to many biblical references in their songs to list so here is a link that can help but is by no means the total of it. http://www.atu2.com/lyrics/biblerefs.html Anyway U2 is Christian just not the Christianity that alot of people are used to. So here is my favorite U2 show. It is not rare. In fact you can get this at many other blogs, but I just want it to be at my blog because they (U2) are what my blog is about, leading the blind and lost to the truth in an unconventional way. As Robert Hunter wrote and Jerry Garcia sang "Once in a while you can get shown the light, in the strangest of places if you look at it right."

Throwing Stones

I have found one of the biggest road blocks to people getting to know Jesus and follow His teachings is Christians. They are supposed to lead others to Jesus but instead they chase people away by misrepresenting the grace and love of God.
In the time of Jesus if you were condemned to death by the Jewish community and Levitical Law the form of carrying out the death sentence was public stoning. What I have come to find is that many of the physical things and events of the bible represent spiritual truths and lessons for us today. And public stoning for us represents us publicly condemning or judging another. And that's what many Christians do. They judge or condemn others thinking that pointing out others faults will somehow make them see they need Jesus. Problem is it doesn't work.
What does it say in 1 John 4:7, 8 about those who follow Jesus? They should walk in Love
1John 2:6, He who says he abides in Him ought himself also walk just as He walked. The He is Jesus so we should look at Jesus as our model. So if we want to be Contagious Christians we should look at what Jesus said and did as a model for how we love.
When Jesus encounters people who are living a sinful lifestyle how does He go about dealing with their immorality?

If we look at the Samaritan woman at the well in John 4 He does not dwell on the fact she lives an immoral life. He does not judge or condemn. Jesus said in John 12:47, “I came not to judge the world but to save the world.” And in Luke 6:37 Jesus said, “Judge not and ye shall not be judged, condemn not and ye shall not be condemned.”
Jesus takes it a step further when He encounters the woman caught in the act of adultery in John 8. Not only does He not speak condemnation but He defends her against those who do.
The story of the Prodigal Son in Luke 15:20 can show us what the Fathers heart is like. When the son who went astray came back we see the father running out to meet him. Why would he run and not wait? I believe Deuteronomy 21:18-21 gives us a clue. It says if a man has a stubborn and rebellious son the men of the city shall stone him to death. So I feel he ran to protect the son from the stones.

So are we going to be stone throwers or stone shields to those who we encounter?

Jesus gave nothing but grace to the sinners who lived immoral lives. The only ones he gave out judgment and condemned were the religious ones who lacked humility and pointed out other faults. Jesus said “I will make you fishers of men”. We are just here to catch the fish not clean the fish.
In the end we all sin and the penalty for all sin is the same. No one is better or less of a sinner in Gods eyes. Jesus took off His clothes to wash the feet of the apostles. We are not to cover up our faults when helping others. Jesus showed us how to do it in John 13. When He was cleaning the feet of the Apostles Jesus first took off his clothes. He showed them that He was a human too. That He was like them and then humbly served them. When we minister to others we are most effective when we share in a humble way and serve others. Good results happen when we show others the truth about ourselves that we are imperfect too. We have the best chance of them listening and receiving what we have found to cover them when they know we are just like them (sinners).
One more thing: Our walk will make more impact than our talk. Matthew 25:35-36 shows us we are to feed the hungry, put clothes on the naked, give a drink to the thirsty, take in the homeless, visit the sick and imprisoned.
People won’t want what you share until they know you care.

Bela Fleck and The Flecktones, Camp Mather, CA, 9-02-1990 (FM)

Great musicians stretching the boundaries of musical art forms and creating something new and different.  I haven't seen this one in circulation so I digitized my old tape.  There might be better versions out there but I have not seen them.  Anyway.  There are only three shows of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones from 1990 on the archive and two are audience, so this is a rare treat.

This is from a tape I have had for years.  This is feel good music with a sense of humor.
Two guys playing tin pan alley blues music.  It's acoustic guitar and harmonica.  They are joined by percussionist Jody Huelets, playing a cardboard box, Jack Daniel Gift carton.
Love songs like "How can I Miss You When You Won't Go Away" and social protest songs like "Who Drank My Beer?" make this a fun listen. I believe the last song is from a show at Amy's Orchid Lounge the next night.  If you want to smile listen to this.

Fossil Creek, Arizona

When things start to heat up in Central Arizona there is a special place I like to visit to cool off. It is an amazing place just east of Camp Verde called Fossil Creek. Fossil Creek is a spring fed stream that runs southwest from its source for about fifteen miles and empties into the Verde River.
Fossil Creek is fed by a spring that produces close to a million gallons of crystal clear water an hour. This water comes out of the ground at a perfect 72 degrees and is full of minerals that give the creek an amazing aqua blue color. The surrounding area is a high desert environment in an entrenched canyon with mesquite, pinion pine and Juniper, along with some cactus and yucca. The canyon bottom is about 4300 feet in elevation while the canyon rim is above 6000 feet. While the canyon environment is typical of the high desert the environment along the creek is unique and special due to all the water. Along the creek is one of the most diverse riparian areas in Arizona, with over thirty species of trees and shrubs and over a hundred species of birds that have been observed in this unique habitat.
Visiting Fossil Creek is easy because a road runs parallel to it for a few miles and crosses it on a bridge in one location. The great swimming holes and easy access can make some of the spots very crowded. The places right below the bridge while nice are often very crowded.
Farther up the road from the bridge is a trail access that leads to a beautiful waterfall. The trail is only about a mile or so long and winds along the creek and on the way you pass several small falls and pools that are quite spectacular.
The falls at the end of this trail while often crowded are amazing and well worth the short mile hike. The falls are about 20 feet high with a deep pool of crystal clear water.
Many people come here to dive off the rocks and the falls into the deep water below. And it can be very crowded and busy on the week ends.
If you want more solitude there are several other spots you can stop between the bridge and the falls trails that all have great swimming opportunities that offer more peace and quiet.
If you want even more solitude there is a three mile long trail that leads to the spring at the source of the creek. This trail starts farther up the road toward strawberry and drops 1300 feet down to the spring. This will tend to have a little less traffic than the easy to reach spots that are close to the car. Hiking up stream past the falls or downstream from the springs will offer you more solitude as well, where you might find that perfect place to have all to yourself.
The Creek was not always this nice. For a long time much of the water flow was diverted by a dam and traveled by flume to a power plant. The work on the dam and power plant started in 1916 and in the 1920 and 30s this helped supply power to Phoenix. The power plant was decommissioned in 1999 and now the full flow of the creek has been restored, and the results are amazing.
To get to this desert oasis called Fossil Creek you take Interstate 17 north from Phoenix or south from Flagstaff. You exit on State Route 260 heading east and pass through Camp Verde. You then turn right on Forest Road 708 (sign says Fossil Creek) less than 10 miles from I-17. The forest road is very winding and also very bumpy but it's passable by standard vehicles if you take it slow. It is about 15 miles of dirt road to the Fossil Creek Bridge. You used to be able to come down this same road from Strawberry but there was a landslide and the forest service will not fix it. But that road can get you to a trailhead to hike down into the canyon to get to Fossil Springs (the source of all this water). At Strawberry from Highway 87 you take Fossil Creek Road (Forest Road 708) for about 5 miles to get the Fossil Springs trail head. The first 2 miles or so is paved; the next 3 miles will be on a rough but maintained dirt road that any car can drive on. After about 5 miles on Fossil Creek Road you'll see a turnoff that leads to a parking lot on the right side.  Haven't had enough? Or need more informations? Here is another post for this fantastic Paradise in the desert!
 http://azjonesoutdoor.blogspot.com/2011/06/fossil-creek-part-two.html

Always check with the Forest Service before trying this.  They frequently close this area and sometimes restrict access to a certain number of people per day.

Grateful Dead, Boston Music Hall 12-01-1973 (SBD)

This is a beautiful recording from the Grateful Dead during a time when they played some of their most inspired shows.  This fills in the show that was missing from the Dicks Pick #14 that has the show before and after this one.  Garcia has a beautiful guitar tone during this time period, and the playing is inspired.

Emmylou Harris and The O'Kanes , Camp Mather, CA, 9-01-90 (FM)

Here is a cool Emmylou Harris show along with an opening act The O'Kanes, that Emmylou sits in with for a few songs. It's from the Strawberry Music Festival and sounds great. For me Emmylou is an American treasure. I have seen the Emmylou set in a few collections but not the O'Kanes set with Emmylou to go with it.

This one is worth bringing back.  Another fine soundboard David Nelson Band recording from back in 2000.  Again I first posted this in 2010, and I don't think it was in circulation before that.  So this was or is another Arizona Jones exclusive.

Eric Clapton, Tokyo Japan, October 1993 (SBD)

This one is a really nice Eric Clapton recording, recorded over several nights at Tokyo's Budokan Theater.  It has a great mix of Clapton doing traditional blues like his "Cradle Music" stuff, and some of his classic rock, and a little of  the pop hits he received Grammys for.  It appears to be a Soundboard / PreFM  that was mixed for broadcast with a mix of soundboard with some crowd mics used to get that live ambience.  It was taken from some Mid Valley silvers.  This is a must for any Clapton fan

Here is yet another great recording of Shawn Lane and Jonas Hellborg from back in 1996.  This one was more widely circulated.  It came with some artwork that had a sort of Zen, Middle Eastern feel.  I saw it in two different versions.
It is really hot so don't pass this one by.

Here is what the old artwork looked like, if you prefer that.

He is yet another amazing recording of the great guitarist Shawn Lane and the extremely talented bass player Jonas Hellborg.

Again this came from Dave Sez and his extensive Dave sez archives.  Another big thanks to Dave!  Dave Sez said "A profound thanks to willjay and the late great Dr. Fusion".  I guess he got it from the Dr. Fusion blog back in the day.  Remember this cat?
Sad that the blog is no longer active and the links are all dead.  That place was amazing.  Anyway enough of me rambling on.  Here is the show, enjoy!
