Allman Brothers Band, Manchester, TN, 6-10-2005

Well tonight at the Beacon Theater in New York the Allman Brothers play their last show.  Hard to believe it.  But it is coming to an end.  The band started in 1969 and survived the deaths of founding members Duane Allman and Berry Oakley.  And they even survived the falling out between Dickey Betts and the rest of the band.  Greg Allman, Jai Johanny Johanson and Butch Trucks, held it together and found replacements, and for the last fourteen or fifteen years it has been a solid stable group.  And this last version of the band has been as good as ever.  So in honor of 45 years of the Allman Brothers I'm posting this recording.  It is one of the few in the last decade or so that was not commercially released or sold on their web site.  And it is a pretty nice but short show, and decent sound quality.

Los Lobos, Chicago, IL, 12-14-1984 (FM)

We are going back 30 years.  And a band from East LA started making a splash.  Los Lobos had just recorded its first major label album, Will The Wolf Survive, and was getting some radio air play.  This is a great recording of them from that time.  And I must say it just plain rocks!
So here it is, just a little band from East LA, that found themselves playing in Chicago back 30 years ago.  The sign says fireworks are prohibited in East LA, but Los Lobos shows from this time had plenty of fireworks to be sure.

A Ghost Story

Well it's late October when the kids dress up for Halloween and people decorate their homes with Jack-o-lanterns, black cats and ghosts. I already did a story on costumes this month so here is a ghost story of sorts. It is called
The Holy What? Or Who Is The Holy Spirit (Holy Ghost) and What Does He Do?
Most Christianity today offers us life after death. In a world where people are dying of obesity and others are dying of starvation, a world where people are captive to the limitations of poverty while others are slaves to the possessions they are maintaining, most of today’s Christianity is offering people a life after death but most people are looking for a life before death. Jesus did not just come to prepare us to die but to teach us how to live. He wasn’t just about getting us up to heaven after we die but about bringing a taste of God’s kingdom to earth. Jesus was a revolutionary and the revolution He started did not conform to the ways of the world. His revolution is where the poor are blessed not the wealthy who seem blessed. His revolution is where the last are first. His revolution brings comfort to the disturbed and it disturbs the comfortable. Jesus spoke of an abundant life not a life of abundance. Not a life with a lot of money or things but a life with a lot of. . . . life. So why don’t we see a big difference in most Christians? It is simple the reason is their lack of a relationship with the Holy Spirit.
Of the three parts of God the most misunderstood and neglected is the Holy Spirit. Like the mention and discussion of Jesus divides and causes conflict between the world and the church, the mention and discussion of the Holy Spirit causes division in the church.
So what is the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God, and The Holy spirit is a person not an action, or event or a thing. He has a mind, Romans 8:28. He has a will, 1 Corinthians 12:11. He has emotions, Romans 15:30. He speaks, Hebrews 7. He teaches, 1 Corinthians 2:5. He can be grieved, Ephesians 4:30. He can be insulted, Hebrews 10:29. He can have communion (share closeness) with you, 2 Corinthians 13:14. He can be like us, the “Us” and “Our” refers to the Father , the Son and the Holy Spirit God said “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness.” Genesis 1:26
He has been there since the beginning. The spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the water. Genesis 1:2,
What is the Holy Spirit’s Purpose? His purpose is to glorify God and spread the kingdom of God. He does this by helping us witness to others. You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you. . . . .and you shall be a witness to Me. Acts 1:8. The Holy Spirit does this through us by telling others what God has done. They were filled with the Holy Spirit and they began to speak with other tongues. . . . about. . . .the wonderful works of God. Acts 2:4 and 2:11. Jesus said in John 16:14, “He (the Holy Spirit) will glorify Me.”Where and with whom is the Holy Spirit? He is most evident in the hearts of followers of Jesus Christ. Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?” 1 Corinthians 3:16. All believers can receive Him. For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, 1 Corinthians 12:13.
What does the Holy Spirit do? He will guide us. “guide you in all truth”, John 16:13. He will tell the future. “tell you of things to come”. John 16:13. He will convict us. “convict the world of sin”, John 16:8. He will help us pray as we should. “for we d not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us.” “He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.” Romans 8:26, 27. He lets believers know we are God’s children. “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.” Romans 8:16. He teaches us. The Holy Spirit. . . . will teach you all things, and bring you to remembrance all things that I have said to you.” John 14:16. If we are led by the Spirit, He changes us. “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control.” Galatians 5:22, 23. He gives us spiritual gifts or powers to do God’s will. “But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: for one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith. . . to another gifts of healings . . . to another workings of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of Spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works in all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills, 1 Corinthians 12.
So you may be a believer in Christ but be wondering or asking "How come I don't have evidence of this change or this power of the Holy Spirit in my life?" The evidence of the Holy Spirit will depend on your relationship with the Holy Spirit. First of all the evidence of the Holy Spirit’s power comes if you are in God’s will and not distracted by things of the world. Anyone who loves Me, he will keep My word, and My Father will love him and We will come to him and make Our home with him, John 14:23.
Those who love according to the flesh set their minds on things of the flesh. Those who live according to the Spirit the things of the Spirit, Romans 5:5. As for as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are the sons of God. You must let the Spirit lead.
So You say I am keeping God’s word, I am living according to the Spirit, I feel I am in God’s will for my life. I see a change in me (fruit of the spirit) but I don’t see gifts or powers like the apostles had of healing, prophecy, words of knowledge, speaking in tongues. Jesus said that we would do greater things than Him when the Holy Spirit comes. So have we? Well I will address that and the three differnet types of relationship to the Holy Spirit in part two of the Holy Ghost, so stay tuned.

A Ghost Story Part Two

This is part two of my version of a ghost story. It is about the Holy Spirit (Holy Ghost) and how we can have a relationship with Him that brings life changing power into our lives.

Well I left you with a question "Why doesn’t a follower of Christ who is “sanctified” (in other words living according to the word and in God’s will) not have evidence of powers of The Holy Spirit like the apostles had of healing, prophecy, words of knowledge, speaking in tongues?" After all it says in Acts 1:8 “You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you”. And why aren’t believers doing “greater things than Him when the Holy Spirit comes”. As Jesus promised?
Maybe you don’t believe that believers get any more than what you have at salvation, and many are content to just be saved but not do greater things than Jesus. Many believe the powers ceased with the apostles (and this is where a division in Christianity is formed). Many think they received the Holy Spirit at salvation and that is all there is, nothing more. But I think not and I show why I feel this way.
First off let’s look at an event that happened in Acts 19:1-6. Paul asked these believers “Did you not receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said “We have not so much as heard weather there is a Holy Spirit.” So in Acts 19:6 it says “the Holy Spirit came upon them”. So here we see people who are believers with a deficiency of the Holy Spirit. And latter they receive more.
The Old Testament is a picture or illustration of the spiritual experience. It illustrates with physical pictures experiences what we can have in our spiritual life. Well I’m a slow learner you see, like a child in these things so like most children I need pictures in my book to aid with my comprehension.
So the picture of being born again in the Old Testament is The Israelites being freed from slavery in Egypt. Just like them Jesus set me free from my slavery to sin. Just like them Jesus led me out of captivity to a place where I can follow God. But just like the Israelites in the desert following God I know there can be more.
Like I said in the first part of this “Holy Ghost Story” Much of Christianity today offers us life after death (Salvation). But most people are looking for a life before death. Jesus did not just come to prepare us to die but to teach us how to live. He wasn’t just about getting us up to heaven after we die but about bringing a taste of God’s kingdom to earth. Jesus spoke of an abundant life not a life of abundance. Not a life with a lot of money or things but a life with a lot of. . . . life.
So the picture of this abundant life in the Old Testament is the Promised Land. A place where there is Holy Spirit power to fight the giants (giant problems) in our lives not a place where there are no problems. It’s a place where there is abundant spiritual fruit not just abundant wealth. It’s a place where the real battles for territory in God’s kingdom are fought and sometimes lost if we are not careful. But most of us get to the “Place of The Crossing” and turn back. We see in the bible that twelve spies went in to see the Promised Land and only two of twelve wanted to enter. And most Christians today are the same way. Content with their “dry” walk with God in the desert. This “Place of the Crossing” is an important spot in the bible, it is the same place where John The Baptist did his ministry and it is where the Holy Spirit fell “upon” Jesus, and from then on He had great power, and it represents where it can fall “upon” us too.
So what I see in this entering of the Promised Land is a second baptism the first is the born again experience as pictured by the crossing of the Red Sea but the crossing of the Jordan is a picture of being baptized in the Holy Spirit as Jesus spoke about in Acts 1:5. Now you may say wait a minute, I received the Holy Spirit when I was born again. And well. . . you would be right. But there is more. There are three types of relationships to the Holy Spirit. There is the Holy Spirit with you, The Holy Spirit in you, and the Holy Spirit upon you. I will use the Apostles relationship to the Holy Spirit to illustrate this. In John 14:17 Jesus said to the Apostles, “The Spirit of Truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him, nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will soon be in you”. The Apostles could not receive salvation yet because Jesus had not yet died for their sins. And this for us is our relationship to the Holy Spirit before we receive the blood of salvation, the Holy Spirit with us. This is when the Holy Spirit works to bring a non believer to God. Now look in John 20:22. Jesus has died on the cross and is resurrected and He is with the Apostles. Jesus breathed on them and said to them “receive the Holy Spirit”. At this moment they are born again and the Holy Spirit is in them (like most of us). They could not receive the Holy Spirit until Jesus paid a price for their sin and neither could we. So now the Holy Spirit is in them. Then why didn’t they start doing things with power? It’s because there is more than just having the Holy Spirit in you! Now let’s look at Luke 24:49. Jesus said “I send the Promise of the Father upon you”. And Jesus said in Acts 1: 8 “You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be witnesses to me”. So the Apostles waited and then on the day of Pentecost in Acts 23 “Tongues of fire came upon them.” And they became witnesses to Him. They were not just witnessing but they were a witness. When the Holy Spirit is upon you, you don’t go and witness you just are a witness where ever you go! Note that the Spirit in you is to refine and change you, and the Spirit upon you is for you to have the power to bring change to others.
So how do I receive this second Baptism? The same way you receive the first gift of salvation. Just like salvation you can’t earn it, and you can’t buy it. It comes simply by believing and asking. And the first thing is a step of Faith that it is real. The Israelites had to step out into the Jordan with the faith that the waters would part. The water did not part first it only did once they took a step of faith. And it stopped 50 miles upstream from them. So they had to have faith in something not seen. So once you have faith you must ask, just like we do for the gift of salvation. Jesus said in Luke 11:13 “If you being evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?” So ask.
So you say I have asked I pray and nothing happens. So what is in the way?
So what does the picture of the book of Joshua tell me about how they entered the Promised Land. Perhaps it will give us more clues of how we can receive the “Promise of the Father” the Holy Spirit upon us not just in us? Here is a little of the many things I found. When they crossed the river before they could get busy taking the land they had to build a monument of 12 stones (Joshua 4). To me this relates to us the “living stones” being united in body and in spirit. That’s why they built two 12 stone monuments, one for all to see on dry land (the body) and one in the river bed that got covered by the Jordan once it flowed (the spirit). This relates to Acts 2 “They (the 12) were all with one accord in one place” when the Holy Spirit flowed upon them. They were all of one accord. They were unified. Jesus prayed in John 17:20-26 three times for our unity. Why? Because it’s important! He prayed “that they all may be one” and again, “that they may be one just as We are one” and “that they may be made perfect in one”. In 1 Peter 2:5 it says “You also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood.” We are the stones that make today’s memorial. But it’s not easy. And Satan wants us broken apart. If we look at the construction of the memorial the stones are taken out of the river and carried on the shoulders. This represents that we have to carry each other, work together and place others above ourselves to get the job done. Ephesians 5:21 Apostle Paul said we should be “Submitting to one another in fear of the Lord”. Submitting means to place others needs above yours or to lift them up. The rocks used are river rocks and that means they have spent time bumping into each other to be ready to be used. Until this memorial is in place the Israelites did not move forward. Until the memorial was built the water (Spirit) did not flow.
So what’s next in Joshua before they got busy and took the Promised Land? Look at Joshua 4:19. They camped at a place called Gilgal which means rolling. This is where they made the memorial and this is where they camped for a while and had a group circumcision as seen in Joshua 5:2-9. Well I’m not suggesting circumcision ... am I? Well not a physical one at least. This is where the comfortable get uncomfortable. But I feel this is where we get things rolling so to speak.
So let’s look at what circumcision means to us in the spiritual context instead of the physical context. It says they used flint knives, so what knife are we going to use? We should use the sharpest thing I know of, the word of God. So we use the word of God to trim away parts of our life that don't belong. So what does the act of circumcision represent? The most obvious is it represents a cutting away or removal of sinful behavior. What is sinful behavior? Anything that separates us from God. It could be surfing the web when I should be in the word. It might be any number of things. It might be that love of possessions like the rich young ruler who Jesus asked to give away all he had. If you place it first before God it’s what keeps you from God. If ministering to your possessions makes you too busy to take time to read God’s word or pray it might be something to look at. You might be in bondage to your stuff and it might be your master.
So maybe you still can’t identify anything like that what else could it be? Let’s go deeper. This is about the spirit not the physical. What keeps me from having the Holy Spirit flowing in me might be that I am operating from my intellect instead of from my heart, for me this was a big one and for me it was my intellect not wanting to speak in tongues. But it says in 1 Corinthians 14:1 I am to desire spiritual gifts. And so the word of God cut back my intellect and I feel now this is a sign and a seal for us spiritually just as circumcision was a sign and a seal physically. For some people their intellect won’t allow them to believe the gifts are for today and that they ceased.
In Ezekiel 47 Ezekiel sees a vision of water flowing out of the temple. This represents the Holy Spirit flowing. This is the type of place we want to be or we won’t make an impact for God’s kingdom. Not by might nor by power but by the Holy Spirit says the Lord. Well in Ezekiel 47 the source of the water is the alter. The thing that will get the Holy Spirit flowing for our life often is sacrifice. The thing that will get the memorial built is a cutting away of ourselves and placing others before us by giving up my jealousy of someone, or giving up my resentment toward someone who hurt me in the past. Giving up my fears that I carry because of my past experience and letting go of the bitterness about what happened. That’s what true Christ like love looks like. . In John 15:12 He said “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you”. So how did He love us? He loved by sacrificing. He’s not asking here, He is commanding us. This is not optional.
Giving up control and trusting others. Placing others needs before my own. Laying down my own ambitions and agendas and not expecting others to. Having Love and compassion and grace for each other. Forgiving others if they make mistakes and not being offended by others if they point out mine. So it is true that all who are saved receive the Holy Spirit. But often we hold back parts of our lives and don’t let the Spirit control that part.
So you have the Holy Spirit but does the Holy Spirit have you?

West Clear Creek Wilderness, The White Box

This is a return to an old favorite, West Clear Creek Wilderness, AZ.  I have posted about this place before, but there is so much to it and it draws me back again and again.  My go to place in the canyon is the waterfall, but many people seek out this location farther up the canyon.  This is called the White Box.
It is one of the narrowest parts of the canyon with steep white or light orange sandstone cliffs on each side of the creek.  And it stays narrow for quite a stretch with long deep pools that you must swim to get through.  Most people come here to see the "hanging gardens" is downstream from the White Box.  But they must pass through here to get to it
As you can see this would not be a place to go during the monsoon season when there is the potential for flash floods.  If you were in the white box when a flash flood came there would be no place to hide and it would most likely be fatal.  The water could rise in here in a big hurry.  So if you are going to go get a good weather report in advance and be careful.

Now to get there there is a very rough and rocky road that takes you to the edge of the canyon and then it is a steep scramble down a narrow trail with some loose slippery spots to get to the canyon bottom.  The Trailhead is at around 5,840 feet and you drop about 600 feet to the canyon bottom.  Once at the bottom be sure to make sure you take note of the exit point because on the way back you could go right past it and have some problems finding your way out.  Thee really is only one way in and one way out in this part of the canyon unless you are a bird.  Once you are down in the canyon you head down stream and right away the walls of the canyon close in on you and you encounter the first places you must swim.

In between the large pools are small areas that have large boulders with water running between them that you boulder hop through to get to the next swim

After a short distance you get to this narrow opening, that you pass through.  From the starting point you can't see the other side of the pool and where you will be getting out.  Once past the opening you find that this is a very long pool with large cliffs and it goes for 100 yards or more.  On one side there is a log jammed between the cliffs way above you head and someone has made a rope swing out of it

In these deep pools where you must swim if you have anything like camera gear you will need dry bags to store it.  For me, I go over night so my sleeping bag, food and clothes must all be in dry bags in my pack.  I use a couple of foam pads doubled over to help the pack float better and take on less water.
I'm not sure how many of these big pools there are but there are several of them and for me this is the fun part.  Swimming through these beautiful slots in the cool water on a Hot Arizona summer day.  If you were to try this in the winter you would probably end up with hypothermia.

This is the last of the bigger pools you cross on the way down stream.  It is a very long one but there are some ledges on the right side you can climb out on.
After this the canyon opens up and there are more trees and brush and you boulder hop down stream and fight through the brush and trees as you go.  There are an occasional place you could camp as you head down stream.  from here there are about five more smaller pools to swim or wade before you get to the destination, of the "hanging garden".
The "Hanging Garden: is a spring that comes out of the side of the canyon wall and has created a travertine build up that juts out over the creek.  And the spring water falls off the travertine fan into the creek.  Before I heard everyone calling it the Hanging Garden, I used to call it "Shower Bath Spring" for lack of a better name, because you can stand in the creek and have a shower of water pour down on you.  Under the little shower like fall there is a cave that goes back in under the fall.  I heard the old timers called it the Cache Hole.  Maybe they stored things in there.
Once you have your fill of the Hanging gardens you just head back out the way you came Through the White Box, and then take the steep hike out and up to the canyon rim.
To get there: From the intersection of SR87 & US260 north of Strawberry AZ. Head west on US260 and in just a few miles turn right at mile marker 249 onto FR 144. In 1.8 miles turn left onto FR 149. In 1.1 miles, turn left onto FR 142 at the T-junction. Take 142 until you get to 142A and turn right.  Then take 142A until you get to 142B and turn left.  Take 142B to the canyon edge.
Some people come in off the highway at 142 but I prefer taking 149.  It is a better road.  But once you get to 142A it is more of a rocky jeep trail than a road.  It is slow going and high clearance is needed in places.
The actual hike is only around 5 miles or so round trip but it will take 5 hours or more.  This is a remote wilderness and this should only be attempted by people who are in good condition.
For more about West Clear Creek Wilderness here are some of my other posts.

Jethro Tull, Buenos Aires, Argentina, 4-20-2007 (SBD)

This is an acoustic show by Jethro Tull with an additional violin player.  Real nice twist on Jethro Tull's songs.  The sound quality is great too.  I think it is worth a listen.

Barenaked Ladies, Santa Maria, 10-13-94

Serious Musicians who don't act too serious. Is this music with some comedy thrown in or comedy with some music in the mix. When The Barenaked Ladies put on a show it's always unpredictable.
I converted this to digital back in 2010 and posted it.  I thought since it is an Arizona Jones original I would refresh the links.

I was probaly the only fan of theirs on the Cental Coast that was not at the show. So this is a pretty rare recording. The venue is a Hilton Hotel at the air strip in Santa Maria, CA

Seldom Scene, McCabe's, Santa Monica, CA 1-19-90 (SBD)

This is a repost of a show I put up back in 2010.  I thought since this is one I had not seen anywhere else and appears to be an Arizona Jones exclusive, it would be good to bring it back.  I ripped this from a second generation soundboard tape I have had of the show since around 1990. It has been listened to a lot so there has been some wear to the tape over time. But I think it still sounds pretty good. It is a real nice show with some great banter and the band appears to be having a lot of fun in this small club. So for the bluegrass fans of my blog a special gift that can only be found here.

The Radiators, Cajun House, Scottsdale AZ, 3-17-1998 (SBD)

The party band from a party town, New Orleans.  The Radiators played their own type of swamp rock that they called "Fish Head Music".  The Radiators were together for an amazing 33 years with the same five members.  This is a fun show I went to back in 1998 on Saint Patrick's Day, and was recorded off the soundboard by my friend Nick from Sedona.

There was no set list for this show on Featbase, so I might have been one of the few people to have a recording of this show until I put this on Dime.  And now it is here for everyone to enjoy.

David Nelson Band, Rialto Theater, Tucson, AZ 2-05-99 (SBD)

David Nelson is one of the founding members of the New Riders Of The Purple Sage. His roots in music go back to playing with Jerry Garcia before the Grateful Dead were formed. He also played in the Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band. This San Francisco scene veteran continued to stretch the boundaries yet still blends in American roots music. Grateful Dead lyric writer Robert Hunter even joined the team giving DNB even more credability and a further conection to the Grateful Dead's music.
I have not seen this one anywhere so I guess it is an AZ Jones exclusive, thanks to the recording from my old friend Phil.  Farmer Allen requested some of these DNB shows from 1999 that were only found here and that sounded like a good idea, so here you are.

Coyote Buttes, North Section

One of the most fantastic places to see sandstone formations is called Coyote Buttes. This area is located along the Arizona Utah border between Page Arizona and Kanab Utah. The first time I saw it was by accident. I was intending to backpack through a long slot canyon called Buckskin Gulch. However the weather forecast had a chance of rain (dangerous for slot canyons).

So I just started off out into the desert to camp away from the slot. What I found was a fantasy land of rock of all colors and shapes.  Latter I found out that it is a permit only and day use only area.
But what a treat I found as I walked farther and farther into a dream world of colorful swirling rocks. With patterns and shapes I could never have dreamed of.
Nothing could prepare me for what I found as I went farther and farther into this crazy fantasy land of stone.
Giant beehive or tee pee shaped buttes with stripes of all colors, Swirls and patterns and stripes in rock like I had never seen. Words can't describe this place. Hopefully the photos can show you just a hint of how amazing this is. But really they of course will fall short of showing you the context and feeling of this epic stone landscape.

Back then I didn't have digital cameras and it was so fantastic I ran out of film. But it was some of the best rolls of film I ever shot.
And I was glad that I had to change my plans due to the weather. This place is very photogenic and is a destination for photographers from around the world. And photos of this area are often found in magazines like Arizona Highways.
Anyway here is how you get there the right way. To get to the trail head you take Highway 89. The turn-off is located on the south (right side coming from Kanab) side of the road. Its between mile markers 25 and 26, at a curve in the road, at the end of a guard rail. Turn at the unmarked dirt road. This is House Rock Road. You take this dirt road south for about 8.3 miles to the Wirepass trailhead. This is also the trail head for the Wirepass entrance to Buckskin Gulch.
The trail is in a wash for the first .6 miles and then there is a marked right turn out of the wash. At the top of the first hill is the Coyote Buttes trail register, then the path follows an old sandy jeep track over a plateau and down to another dry wash. Beyond here it is less sand and more rock and the trail is harder to see. generally you head south. The route is across the wash and up the far side to the top of a small ridge, where you keep left left. Over the ridge, the land opens out to reveal a large area of sand and slickrock, with a long, large ridge to the right (the north part of Coyote Buttes), with an area of rock domes (beehives and tee pees) below. About 2 miles in front of you is the real destination at the base of a large white cliff with a vertical crack in the middle.
Right below this crack is where the best formations are (the wave). While all the rest is beautiful and impressive the wave has unique color and the consistent texture and conformity to the layers makes it special and photogenic.
It takes between one and two hours, and the hike is relatively easy, without much elevation change.
But the whole area is worth looking at and there are some arches and dinosaur tracks and just south of the Wave area is a place many call the Wave Two so spend the whole day exploring the area.
Here is a map of the hike that I made up to help get you there.
Permits: Entry to North or South Coyote Buttes costs $7 or $5 per person respectively, with a limit of 20 people for each region and no more than 6 in a single group. Half these are bookable up to 4 months in advance, by writing to the BLM in Kanab or applying via their website (https://www.blm.gov/az/paria/index.cfm, sometimes inaccessible), while the other half are available by applying in person to the BLM office at the Paria River (located south of Highway 89 between mile post 21 and 22, between Kanab and Page, Arizona), before 9 am on the day prior to the intended visit (the office opens at 8.30 am). At 9 am, if more than ten people are waiting, a lottery system is used to select the chosen few. All successful applicants receive a copy of the access regulations and, for North Coyote Buttes, a topographic map to help identify the route to the Wave, which is not well marked on the ground. There is high demand for the advance permits and all may be taken many months before the date of travel. A permit is also required for dogs - another $5. No overnight camping is permitted anywhere in the area.
Coyote Buttes Special Permit Offices

Kanab Office: 318 N 100 E Kanab, Utah 84741 435.644.4600.
There is also a south section of Coyote Buttes and I will deal with that on a latter post.
