All of the music recordings on this site are recordings of independent origin (ROIOs) Music that has not been officially released. If you are an artist or a legal representative of an artist and you do not want your ROIO shared on my site for free among your fans (and creating new fans), just tell me in the comment area and I will remove them. By the way these recordings exist. They won't go away. All of them can be found at various places on line. Sharing just keeps the fans that support the artists from having to get ripped off by purchasing them on auction sites, and it also introduces music to people who would never have known the artist, creating a stronger fan base.

Garcia & Saunders, two shows from the Keystone in 1974 (SBD)

Here are two more Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders shows. These are both from the Keystone in Berkeley CA, early in 1974. Some of the songs I first saw circulated as a bootleg called Dicks Gifts and are smoking hot.

Keystone; Berkeley, CA
1/17/74
Soundboard and some matrix.
This comes from several sources to make the complete show.

Disc One 71:08
Set I
Someday Baby [16:24]
La-La [14:04]
Second That Emotion [15:55]
My Funny Valentine [24:41]

Disc Two 74:41

Who's Lovin' You Tonight? [16:40]
Set II
Finders Keepers [11:29]
Think [11:04]
Are You Lonely For Me Baby? [22:34]
Harder They Come [12:49]

Parts of this were found on a CD that circulated called Dicks Gifts, also known as "Legion Of Mary Mystery tape". Supposedly found by Dick Latvala in the vault unlabeled.  You can see that the dead air was cut off some of the songs on the Dicks Gift versions. But this is the complete show. The Dicks Gifts came in this order. The ones that are from this are great soundboard recordings. Finders Keepers is one of my favorites on this.

1. Finders Keepers 10:12
2. Think 9:12
3. Lala 11:34
4. I Second That Emotion 14:31
5. My Funny Valentine 23:59

Jerry Garcia & Merl Saunders, San Francisco, 2-05-74 (SBD)

Someone requested I re-post this so here it is.  I don't always do re-posts but this one seemed like a good idea.  So enjoy!

Here is another Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders show. This one is from 1974. 1974 was another busy year for Garcia. During 1974 he played 41 Grateful Dead shows, just over 100 Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders shows, 7 Great American String Band shows, as well as recording his solo album Complements of Garcia, and the Grateful Dead album Mars Hotel (ugly Rumors). Quite a lot of production. This is a Soundboard show from early in the year during the time when he was in the studio recording Complements of Garcia.

Jerry Garcia and David Grisman, Warfield Theater, May 1992 (SBD)

This recording is a mix of the 5 night Garcia and Grisman run (May 7 - May 11, 1992). The tape was given to David Gans by David Grisman for Gan's Grateful Dead Hour program. The tape was subsequently stolen from Gans and put into circulation.  The quality of this is as good as any official release.

Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band, 10-28-1987

This is another recording of the Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band. This acoustic band played from shows from August to December of 1987. Usually as a first set acoustic and then a second set was played by the regular Jerry Garcia (electric) Band. There were not very many of these shows and you were lucky to get to see this if you did. There were long runs of shows in New York and Los Angeles and then a few a few bay area shows. I was lucky to see a few of the Los Angeles ones and came away very happy.

Jerry Garcia, Solo Acoustic, 4-10-1982

This is Jerry Garcia solo acoustic. It is a pretty good soundboard recording. Jerry did not play many solo performances. I'm not so sure if there are any others. During 1982 he was playing acoustic shows with John Kahn on bass, but this one is solo.

Jerry Garcia at the Matrix, 1968

By October of 1968 the Grateful Dead had already played around 83 shows that year (by the time the year was over Garcia would have played more than 100 shows). They had played shows in Oregon, Washington, and the entire length of California, the New York area twice, and St. Louis, Philadelphia, and Miami. In October there was a break in the action and they were in the studio, but true to form Garcia kept playing live gigs. In October of 1968 Garcia played the Matrix on Fillmore Street in San Francisco under the names of Garcia and Friends (spelled Garrceeah on the posters) and Mickey and The Hartbeats and he also sat in on other gigs. Garcia also played some Matrix shows in December of 1968. These Matrix shows had special guests and lineups that were missing Bob Weir and Pigpen(thus not being under the name Grateful Dead). Some people say that Jack Casady of Jefferson Airplane is the bass player on these shows but I don't know for sure, and he may be for just parts. The shows were loose and had lots of jams and instrumentals. So here is a good sample of that material.

This first one has an unknown harmonica player on some cuts. Many of the tunes are just instrumental versions.

Garcia, Cippolina, Jorma Kaukonen, Casady, Papa John Creach, Nicky Hopkins, 10-21-1970

This is from a Tuesday night Jam session at the Matrix in San Francisco, CA. It is just long instrumental jams with Jerry Garcia and members of Jefferson Airplane, and Quicksilver. The source said it was taken off of a first generation reel that was John Cippolina's. If you like instrumental jams then this may be for you. Listed are three guitar players, two bass players, one keyboard player, and a violinist, it did not say who the drummer was sorry to say. There are also places where there are two keyboard players so there are more players than listed. I like jam one and four the best because they are full of guitar interplay. Number two is a Nicky Hopkins keyboard jam with Papa John's fiddle playing all over it. In all some cools stuff that is unique and different.

Jerry Garcia Band, 11-20-76

Here is another Jerry Band show, this time from 1976. It has a song called Strange Man that Donna sings that is about Jesus so I kinda like that. Anyway again it is a soundboard and it's not bad. I used to live on the Central Coast just a few miles north of Pismo Beach, just at a different point in time. I still miss the ocean, Big Sur, Montana de Oro, farmers market in SLO on Thursday nights, and all that comes with the Central Coast. But AZ isn't all that bad.

Old And In The Way, 7-23-73

Here is yet another show featuring Jerry Garcia from the time period between 1973 and 1975. It's another fine soundboard recording of Old And In The Way. In 1973 Jerry played 26 Old And In The Way shows, along with 74 Grateful Dead shows, and 49 Garcia and Saunders shows. Around 150 shows in one year along with whatever time was spent in the studio producing the Wake Of The flood album. Jerry was also very productive during this time creating new songs. That alot of frequent flier miles. This is one of my favorite time periods of the Grateful Dead. I guess Jerry was trying to stay busy while dealing with the loss of his friend and band mate from the Grateful Dead, Pig Pen, who died at age 27 on 3-08-1973.

Legion Of Mary Band featuring Jerry Garcia, Two shows from April 1975

I started this Jerry Garcia rampage with a April 1975 Legion Of Mary show and it will come to an end with two shows from April 1975. These are both great soundboards. I still have more but I want to move on to something else for a little while. I hope this will keep the Jerry fans happy for a while. The Bottom line show for me is an old friend. I had a tape of it way back in the 80s and listened to it many times.

Great American String Band, 1974

This post is two shows from The Great American String Band. Another Jerry Garcia side project. It only lasted a short time in this configuration. I can only find seven documented shows that they played. This appears to be a continuation of the Old And In The Way idea with Garcia on banjo and Grisman on mandolin. This band then eventually morphed into the first configuration of the David Grisman Quintet. Already at this point they are doing several songs that would be some of the David Grisman Quintet's standards.

Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders, 7-10-1973

Here is yet another great Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders show. This one has some really hot versions and the sound quality is fantastic. Should I stop yet? I still have several more from this era. Jerry and Merl were on fire back in those days. Just think how hot Jerry was playing with the Grateful Dead during this same period.

Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders, 1-19-1973

Here is another Jerry Garcia and Merle Saunders show. This one has Sara Fulcher on vocals in some places and has some rare songs. If you like early '73 Garcia/Saunders, and especially Sara Fulcher's vocal stylings, you'll love this. It has lots of super-rare Fulcher-dominated tunes here. And the sound on this is very good!
