Christmas

For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given: and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6)
But you Bethlehem. Through you are little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of you shall come forth to Me The one to be ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting. (Micah 5:2)
Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel (God is with us). (Isaiah 7:14)
Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David. The Virgin’s name was Mary (Luke 1:26-27)
Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus. (Luke1:30-31)
The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you: Therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son Of God. (Luke 1:35)
And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins. (Matthew 1:21)
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. (John 1:14)
For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, laying in a manger. (Luke 2:11)
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. (John 3:16-17)

The Birthday Party

The Birthday Party
There was a celebrity and he was world famous and he threw a birthday party. He sent out and invitation to every person that he knew. His birthday was significant because everyone knew the year he was born, and everyone knew it was his birthday.
When people came to the birthday celebration the celebrity gave the most fantastic gifts that the world had ever seen, gifts that he purchased at great expense. Strangely, very few of the guests brought gifts for the birthday boy. Instead they gave abundant amounts of gifts to each other, and expected the other guests to give them gifts in return. Many of the guests even denounced the significance of the celebrity’s birthday in the celebration. The guests partied and ate food and had a good time and then all went home. When the party was over the celebrity found that many of his gifts that he intended for his guests were left behind and unopened.
This is a strange story of a strange birthday party to be sure, a party where the person whose birthday it is gives the gifts. A party where the one that is to be celebrated appears to be forgotten by the guests as they all give gifts to each other. Well this is the story of Christmas.
Christmas is the birthday party of the most well known celebrity of all time. And everyone knows the year He was born. Time has been split in two by the event of His birth (BC and AD). Many of us today have a day where we have a big party to mark his birth and we give each other gifts but few of us give Jesus anything of much of value. Some of us even question the significance of His birth at all in relation to the Christmas celebration. A recent poll done in England showed that 49 percent of people polled said that Jesus has no significance at all when it comes to the Christmas celebration. At the same time Jesus has invited all of mankind to come to His party, and has offered a gift that He purchased at great expense, and it cannot be returned to the store for a refund. But many of us have left it at the party unopened in an insulting refusal of His kindness and generosity. The gift is eternal life, companionship with the creator of heaven and earth, and forgiveness of all the mistakes we have ever made. Jesus said in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life”. It says whoever, and that means that everyone is invited to take this gift. The price that was paid for the gift was this. An eternal being of unimaginable stature, Jesus, came to earth and humbled Himself by becoming a human baby (completely dependent on his mother). Not born in a mansion or a castle or a five star resort or the finest hospital, but born in a place fit only for animals. Not born to a princess or a king but to an unassuming young girl with a carpenter for a husband. Born into the stigma of being conceived out of wedlock in a culture that frowned on it. And He lived a meek life as a carpenter’s son to then die a humiliating and painful death to buy this gift of everlasting life for all of us.
So what gifts should we bring to the party this year so that we don’t appear to be ungrateful guests at His birthday celebration? Nothing that we bring can come close to the gift he has already bought and paid for in our behalf. But on his wish list are two very simple things. The first one is that he wants us to just receive His gracious gift and wear it. Unlike the ugly tie, or the sweater that you sometimes get a Christmas that you never wear, Jesus has given you a gift that fits and should be worn with pride. The second thing that Jesus desires is to be available. Jesus just wants us to make ourselves available to be used by Him to birth something of value, just as Mary was available to be used by God to birth something of great value. All you have to do is say here I am Lord use me.

Christmas time is full of people trying to capitalize on the birth of Jesus. And some of it gets pretty cheesy. Take a look at the cover for this one. Need I say more. But Christmas Is The Wrong Day, Or Is It?
We Celebrate Christmas on December 25th but is it the right day? We think of Christmas as the birth of Jesus but what day would be His birthday? Well I am here to tell you that it is very unlikely that December 25th was the birthday of Jesus. So, let us look at the Bible for clues as to when Jesus would really have been born.
The first clue is the shepherds were living out in the fields watching their sheep by night (Luke 2:8) Shepherds from that area did not watch their flocks out in the fields by night in the winter. In winter they would bring the sheep into the low lands and the cities and towns because it got so cold. So we know that it was most likely not winter or December 25th.
The second clue is the birth of John the Baptist. John’s father was a priest named Zacharias who was old and married to an older woman named Elizabeth. They were unable to have children and an angel came to Zacharias and told him his wife would conceive. Zacharias was in the division of Abijah (Luke 1:5) serving in the temple when the angel came. The Priests of the division of Abijah were the ones who served in the eighth cycle and would be serving in the temple during June. So if his wife conceives in June, then John the Baptist was born around nine months later in March.
March is the time of the Passover when the Israelites would commemorate and celebrate the way they were delivered from Egypt. In this celebration they are looking for the Messiah who will come now to deliver them. So during this time the Jewish people would (and still do) put out an extra chair and table setting at the Seder or meal because they are waiting for Elijah. They know from a prophecy in Malachi that before the Messiah will come Elijah must appear. So they put out this chair and after dinner the children go out the door and look for Elijah. Jesus said that Elijah had come in spirit in the form of John the Baptist. So it is not a stretch to believe that John the Baptist in the spirit of Elijah came when they were waiting for the appearance of Elijah. I sat this because in Colossians 2:17 it says the festivals are a shadow of things to come, and as I will show you God has actually fulfilled them on the exact day they take place.
In Luke 1 Mary is told by an angel that she will conceive through a miracle, and to go see her cousin Elizabeth who was six month pregnant (also a miracle) with John the Baptist. So six months after John was born Jesus was born. So if John was born in March during the Passover Jesus would have been born in September. Colossians 2:17 says the seven feasts are all about things to come and Jesus Christ. What do I mean? When the people were slaying a lamb in the temple on Passover Jesus the Lamb of God was being slain. When the people were celebrating the Passover they would do what is called Yahats. They take three pieces of matzah (unleavened bread) and the middle matzah of the three ceremonial pieces is broken and wrapped up and is put aside or hidden for the afikoman where the children are then sent to search for it. The kids are promised a reward to whoever finds it. While this was going on Jesus the middle part of the trinity whose body was broken was wrapped in grave clothes and hidden in a tomb. And dare I say there is a reward now for any one of His children who find Him. Then three days later on First Fruits Jesus was the first to rise up from the dead, the first to be born again (the first fruit). 50 days latter Pentecost is a feast about when they received the law and disobeyed and 3000 died. The fulfillment was when the Holy Spirit came and 3000 were saved on that day. The bible says the law brings forth death but the spirit brings life. All of these important events of Jesus happened on feast days to fulfill the prophetic meaning of them. Therefore it should not be surprising that Jesus was born on a feast day. So what feast is in September? Tabernacles
Tabernacles celebrate how God was with the Israelites in the desert 1500 years before Jesus came. Remember how God gave them bread (manna)? Well while they were remembering this God was giving us the real bread of life. The one who is the bread of life was birthed in Bethlehem (house of bread) only five miles from Jerusalem. In the time of Jesus four huge menorahs were being burned during this festival they were stories tall. The historian Josephus said you could see this light from a hundred miles away. At that same time there was this bright light at the temple in Jerusalem, the light that was come to earth was being born. John 1:4 said of His coming “In Him was life and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness and the darkness did not comprehend it”. During the feast or festival of Tabernacles they had come into Jerusalem and camped in small tents (Tabernacles) and they were celebrating how God was with them in the desert. While they did this, just five miles away Jesus called Immanuel or “God is with us” was being born in a manger. In John 1:14 says “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us” the word used in Greek for dwelt is skeeno meaning to tent or encamp or dwell as God did in the tabernacle.

So the feasts all tie together and maybe Jesus was born in September during Tabernacles. But why is Christmas in December. Around the year 320 AD emperor Constantine became a Christian. The problem was most of the people were not Christian. At that time in the Roman Empire the biggest celebration of the people was called Saturnalia it was to celebrate the winter was half over. They put up evergreen trees a tradition they got from the Babylonians. Jeremiah chapter 10:1-4. Do not learn the way of the heathen, for one cuts a tree out of the forest. . . they decorate it with silver and gold. This came from a Pagan practice of worshiping false gods, and so does the Yule log, poinsettias, and holly. So if Jeremiah says don’t do it why do we? Well Emperor Constantine decided he could not change all the traditions because they were so ingrained, so instead he just redeemed it, He called it Christ’s Mass. He decided we will just say the symbols represent other things, and transform this pagan celebration into one about Jesus. So can God take something that is of pagan gods and make it something of value? Well of course, because God can take me and transform me so why not this stuff too? And the truth is He has done just that.
But it’s on the wrong day for Jesus Christ’s birth so what would be the point? Well if Christ was born on tabernacles which make sense then go back nine months and when would Jesus have been conceived? Well around December 25th. So on the darkest day of the year the light of the world came into the world, and ever since darkness has been pushed back or flees at it's presence. The first Hanukkah was started in 164 BC when the Maccabeean brothers took back the temple from an evil occupation (Seleucid Empire) that had defiled it. So once they took back the temple the menorah was lit but they did not have any more oil. In the menorah was only a one day supply of oil. But it would take eight days to make a new batch of the holy oil. The oil lasted eight days (a miracle). So why is Christmas on December 25th? The reason is because a Roman Emperor decided to make it corespond with a Pagan celibration of the winter solstice. Is there however a significance when it comes to Jesus Christ? I think so. The first Hanukkah was on 25th of Chislue. So on that day they lit the menorah and the temple had light and was restored and cleaned. The temple represents the body and oil is a symbol of the Holy Spirit. So I believe there is a good chance that Jesus was conceived on that day to fulfill that festival day, and received a body (temple) and was conceived by the Holy Spirit (a miracle) at this same time. And the light of the world was concieved.

So what does that have to do with us today? Well many of us are in a dark place in our lives. There is an area of our life that is dark and depressing, maybe something we are ashamed of. Maybe our body is defiled or occupied by something evil. Its dark and we know we should be joyful but we can’t get out of this dark place. There is no life in us you might say. We have a mess that needs cleaning in our life just like that temple that was a mess. No man can help us and this problem is too big too great it is beyond what a man can do. And you might say if I could just get out of this dark place maybe God could use me. But God loves to move into the darkest day to the places that are dark and closed up where no one has been (virgin territory). This secretive and closed off place in our lives.
So what happened to Mary in her dark and secret place where there was no life when God intervened? Mary said when told the news that she could be used by God “How can this be I don’t know a man” She thought nothing could be birthed in her dark and secret place without a man. But she then said “Be it unto me according to your will”. And something came to life in her. And that is all it takes for God to use us and birth something special in our lives out of the dark places of our lives. That’s all it takes for God to transform the darkness of our lives to light is simply to say “Be it according to your will”. You see Christmas is as much about conception as it is about birth.

Revelations 3:20 Jesus was talking to the church of Laodicea and He said, “Behold I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him.” So if you want the light to come into your dark problem this Christmas open the door. Christmas is not just about what God did 200 years ago but what God wants to do today. He wants to birth something in you this Christmas season in your darkness and your problems. He wants to transform the dark to light. He wants to redeem what was lost.
Isaiah 9:2 says this of the coming Christ, “The people have walked in darkness have seen the light. Those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them a light has shined. And Isaiah 9:6, “For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given. . . . And His name shall be Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace”. So if you are in darkness and there has never been a darker day, and it is the middle of the winter so to speak, God wants to say this to you.
Isaiah 60:1-3 “Arise shine for thy light has come! And the glory of the Lord is risen upon you. For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and deep darkness of the people. But the Lord will arise over you, and His glory will be seen upon you.” So this Christmas remember that it is not the wrong day after all, in fact it all happened at just the right time. And this Christmas think of this conception of this light to the world and see what God can birth in you this Christmas out of your darkness.

Thanksgiving

As of late I have seen people claim that the United States is not a Christian nation. Even the president went on record to say in a trip to Turkey that Americans “do not consider ourselves a Christian nation, or a Muslim nation, but rather, a nation of citizens who are, uh, bound by a set of values.” Well that's not how this citizen considers our nation. And what are the set of values that Barack Obama is speaking of if not Christian? And where did the values come from that bind us? I would like to say that the set of values are Christian values. So why does our country want to remove these things from the public places? And why do we want to deny that the values that bind our nation together are Christian? Do we no longer want to be a cohesive nation? Are we to no longer let teachers pray at school with children. Why have we taken God out of anything that is publicly funded? Is this what was intended by the ones who fought so hard to be sure we would have liberty that are a "gift of God" as Jefferson said?

One of the last bastion of Christianity in the public domain is the public acknowledgment by our leaders of Thanksgiving. What is the Thanksgiving holiday and how does it show our Christian heritage and values that bind us together as a nation? lets look at the start and trace the history of our country and the intentions for why it was founded.
So here is an early declaration of the intentions of the people who came here. The first Charter for Virginia 1601: "We, greatly commending, and graciously accepting of, their Desires for the Furtherance of so noble a Work, which may, by the Providence of Almighty God, hereafter tend to the Glory of his Divine Majesty, in propagating of Christian Religion to such People, as yet live in Darkness and miserable Ignorance of the true Knowledge and Worship of God. We do, by these our Letters-Patents, graciously accept of, and agree to; their humble and well intended Desires." So their intention was based on spreading Christian values.
So here we will look at the first declaration of Thanksgiving and it is not the Pilgrims of Massachusetts. On December 4, 1619, thirty-eight English settlers landed by ship at Berkeley (Hundred) in Charles City, Virginia to become Pilgrims in our new world. As stated and required by their charter, Charter Berkeley Hundred, “We ordain that the day of our ships arrival at the place assigned for plantation in the land of Virginia shall be yearly and perpetually kept holy as a day of Thanksgiving to Almighty God.So now we will look at the intent of the Massachusetts Pilgrims that we so often associate with the holiday. The Mayflower Compact: "Having undertaken for the Glory of God, and Advancement of the Christian Faith, a Voyage to plant the first Colony in the northern Parts of Virginia; Do by these Presents, solemnly and mutually, in the Presence of God and one another, covenant and combine ourselves together into a civil Body Politic." So again their intention was to be a people who not just are bound by Christian values but to advance Christian faith.
Then once there they had a celebration to give thanks. The original purpose for the Pilgrims in 1619 and in 1621 was to give thanks to God. Being thankful for a safe voyage, bountiful harvest or surviving a brutally cold winter it was all still giving thanks to God. They saw God in the circumstances. It was not lost on them that by some crazy chance there was an Native American already living there who spoke English and who had been taken as a slave to Europe by white men but somehow was willing to help them. Without his help they would have died. They totally understood that that was a coincidence that was hard to explain without God in the explanation.
So now as these people began to organize a union of groups that have settled the "Americas" what values did they use and hold by and with what intent?
The fundamental orders of Connecticut, under which a provisional government was instituted in 1638-39, commence with this declaration: "Forasmuch as it hath pleased the Almighty God by the wise disposition of his divine prudence so to Order and dispose of things that we the Inhabitants and Residents of Windsor, Hartford, and Wethersfield are now cohabiting and dwelling in and upon the River of Connecticut and the Lands there unto adjoining; And well knowing where a people are gathered together the word of God requires that to maintain the peace and vision of such a people there should be an orderly and decent Government established according to God, to order and dispose of the affairs of the people at all seasons as occasions shall require; do therefore associate and convey ourselves to be as one Public state or Commonwealth, and do, for ourselves and our Successors and such as shall be adjoined to us at any time hereafter, enter into Combination and Confederation together, to maintain and preserve the liberty and purity of the gospel of our Lord Jesus that we now professes, as also the discipline of the Churches, that according to the truth of the said gospel is now practiced amongst us." So they unified into a "public state" to maintain and preserve the liberty and purity of the gospel of their Lord Jesus.
So that is a state but what about the nation as they bonded together?
Samuel Adams wrote this about the rights of colonists in 11-20-1772, "The right to freedom being the gift of God Almighty, it is not in the power of man to alienate this gift." Thomas Jefferson wrote this in his Summary Of Rights in 1774. “The God who gave us life, gave us liberty at the same time.” Alexander Hamilton wrote this in an essay in 1775: The Sacred Rights of mankind are not to be rummaged for among old parchments or musty records. They are written, as with a sunbeam, in the whole volume of human nature, by the Hand of the Divinity itself, and can never be erased or obscured by mortal power.
So the values that Barack Obama says bind us start with these men that obviously believe in a God and that all men have rights that come from God and not from a state. These men then declared our independence from England because these "God given rights" were being violated. And the Declaration of Independence recognizes the presence of Divine in human affairs in these words:
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights... appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions... And for the support of this Declaration, with firm reliance on the Protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor." So the values that bound them (and us) were that there was a such thing as a self evident truth, that there was a Creator or God, and that our rights come from God, and that this God is the Supreme Judge of the world, and that God gives us divine protection if we ban together in these values.
So here is a state constitution from the same time. What is their intention and what are their values that bind them together? The Constitution of Delaware, (1776), which required all officers, besides an oath of allegiance, to make and subscribe the following declaration: "I, do profess faith in God the Father, and in Jesus Christ His only Son, and in the Holy Ghost, one God, blessed for evermore, and I do acknowledge the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testament to be given by divine inspiration." Apparently they felt that you are not qualified to be a leader if you don't follow Christ. Here is what John Jay the first Chief Justice of the United States said in 1977: "Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers, and it is the duty, as well as the privilege and the interest, of a Christian nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers." The judicial branch of the new government is telling us we should be a Christian nation.In 1777 the First Continental Congress called the Bible “the great political textbook of the patriots” and appropriated funds to import 20,000 Holy Bibles for the people. That does not look like separation of church and state. It looks like the intention of the founding fathers was to spread the Gospel.
Thomas Jefferson wrote this in his Notes on the State of Virginia 1782: Can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are of the gift of God? That they are not to be violated but with His wrath?"
Benjamin Franklin’s Speech to the Constitutional Convention June 28th 1787 "I've lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing Proofs I see of this Truth - That God governs in the Affairs of Men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his Notice, is it probable that an Empire can rise without his Aid? We have been assured, Sir, in the Sacred Writings, that except the Lord build the House they labor in vain who build it. I firmly believe this, - and I also believe that without his concurring Aid, we shall succeed in this political Building no better than the Builders of Babel." So these founding fathers have an intention of inclusion of Christian values for fear of the failure of our nation. That our liberty would not be secure if this were not the case and that our foundation would be weak and fall.
So the Constitution that these men crafted states that it is to “secure the blessings of liberty” that the founders believed are a gift of God and it is signed “in the year of our Lord”
George Washington at the constitutional convention 1787 said "Let us raise a standard to which the wise and the honest can repair. The event is in the hand of God."
George Washington’s first inaugural address April 30th 1789 said this "The propitious smiles of Heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of order and right which Heaven itself has ordained." So he believes that is we disregard the rules that heaven has ordained (Christian values)God will not smile on our nation. So our first president decided to establish in our government the tradition of Thanksgiving that was already a part of society.
George Washington’s Thanksgiving proclamation 1789: "Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:" "Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country. And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations." So an official proclamation by the government to worship a Christian God. Somehow I am not seeing the intention of the founders of this country to separate church and state.Here is George Washington’s Farewell Address 1796 "Of all the dispositions and habits, which lead to political prosperity, Religion and Morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of Patriotism, who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of Men and Citizens. And let us with caution indulge the supposition, that morality can be maintained without religion. Whatever may be conceded to the influence of refined education on minds of peculiar structure, reason and experience both forbid us to expect, that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle." So it appears that he is promoting Christian values to keep us a strong nation.
Another founding father James Wilson, a signer of the Constitution and an original Justice on the U.S. Supreme Court said this "Human law must rest its authority ultimately upon the authority of that law which is divine....Far from being rivals or enemies, religion and law are twin sisters, friends, and mutual assistants. Indeed, these two sciences run into each other." Not separation of church and state, but mutual assistants.
John Quincy Adams the 6th President of the United States said this: "The general principles on which the fathers achieved independence were . . . the general principles of Christianity." "Duty is ours; results are God's. The first and almost the only Book deserving of universal attention is the Bible.” “It is no slight testimonial, both to the merit and worth of Christianity, that in all ages since its promulgation the great mass of those who have risen to eminence by their profound wisdom and integrity have recognized and reverenced Jesus of Nazareth as the Son of the living God." "… Posterity — you will never know how much it has cost my generation to preserve your freedom. I hope you will make good use of it." So the president is stating that the principles of our country are Christian, so how could they be separate when it is the essence of what our government is based.
And as we as a people traveled west we continued to be about the same values. The Constitution of Illinois of 1870 stated, "We, the people of the State of Illinois, grateful to Almighty God for the civil, political, and religious liberty which He hath so long permitted us to enjoy, and looking to Him for a blessing upon our endeavors to secure and transmit the same unimpaired to succeeding generations."
The Supreme Court stated this in 1892 more than one hundred years after our county was founded, after sighting 87 precedents. "Our laws and our institutions must necessarily be based upon and embody the teachings of The Redeemer of mankind. It's impossible that it should be otherwise; and in this sense and to this extent our civilization and our institutions are emphatically Christian... This is a religious people. This is historically true. From the discovery of this continent to the present hour, there is a single voice making this affirmation... we find everywhere a clear recognition of the same truth... These, and many other matters which might be noticed, add a volume of unofficial declarations to the mass of organic utterances that this is a Christian nation." The President of the United States of America, Abraham Lincoln said this in 3-30-1863, "Whereas, the Senate of the United States, devoutly recognizing the Supreme Authority and just Government of Almighty God, in all the affairs of men and of nations, has, by a resolution, requested the President to designate and set apart a day for National prayer and humiliation."
"And whereas it is the duty of nations as well as of men, to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God, to confess their sins and transgressions, in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon; and to recognize the sublime truth, announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord.
We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of Heaven. We have been preserved, these many years, in peace and prosperity. We have grown in numbers, wealth and power, as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace, and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us; and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us."
"It behooves us then, to humble ourselves before the offended Power, to confess our national sins, and to pray for clemency and forgiveness."
"Now, therefore, in compliance with the request, and fully concurring in the views of the Senate, I do, by this my proclamation, designate and set apart Thursday, the 30th. day of April, 1863, as a day of national humiliation, fasting and prayer. And I do hereby request all the People to abstain, on that day, from their ordinary secular pursuits, and to unite, at their several places of public worship and their respective homes, in keeping the day holy to the Lord, and devoted to the humble discharge of the religious duties proper to that solemn occasion.
All this being done, in sincerity and truth, let us then rest humbly in the hope authorized by the Divine teachings, that the united cry of the Nation will be heard on high, and answered with blessings, no less than the pardon of our national sins, and the restoration of our now divided and suffering Country, to its former happy condition of unity and peace." So with the blessings of the Senate the government was organizing a day of national prayer. Does not look like separation of church and state. instead it looks like there is still the intention to be a people bound together by Christian values.  So here again is the Thanksgiving holiday and the government mandating it as a Christian value that we as a nation should partake in. The first official national declaration of the Thanksgiving holiday by President Abraham Lincoln on 10-03-1836, "To expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom. No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy. It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American People. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwell in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility and Union." And it continued on as a part of our Christian heritage that we a Christian nation continued on to today.
1961, 1962 and 1963 Presidential Thanksgiving Proclamations by John F. Kennedy: "More than three centuries ago, after a year of hardship and peril, humbly and reverently set aside a special day upon which to give thanks to God for their preservation and for and for the good harvest from the virgin soil upon which they had labored. Yet by their faith and their toil they had survived the rigors of the harsh New England winter." and this "Over three centuries ago in Plymouth, on Massachusetts Bay, the Pilgrims established the custom of gathering each year to express their gratitude to God."
So who are we this thanksgiving? Are we no longer as Barack Obama said considering ourselves to be a Christian nation? What are the set of values that are going to bind us? Remember that when we take God out of the equation then who do our rights come from? As Thomas Jefferson said, "Can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are of the gift of God?"
Well over three centuries ago in Plymouth, on Massachusetts Bay, the Pilgrims established the custom of gathering each year to express their gratitude to God...I choose to continue to consider myself part of a Christian nation no matter what anyone else says. And I choose to see the fact that we have been blessed as a nation because of the values that have bound us. So this Thanksgiving lets see it for what it is. Lets be a people that celibrate the values that have made us a strong nation and blessed us. Lets eat some turkey but lets give thanks and hounor those that have come before us and their intentions and beliefs that have given us the liberty that we enjoy

Well does it smell good? When animals are cooking it is a sweet smell to us. That turkey in the oven just smells so great. In the old Testament they sacrificed animals to God on an altar, by burning them. And I'm sure there was a smell like a BBQ. How does that Old Testament picture and principle translate to our walk with god today? God says that a life of Sacrifice is a sweet smell to Him. When we sacrifice some of ourselves to do Gods work it is a sweet smell to God. When we give up some of our worldly lusts (fleshly things) to do something for others it is like a little of us is burning on an altar of sacrifice. Jesus said "If you try to find your life you will loose it but if you loose your life for my sake you will find it". So I ask you as you smell that turkey in the oven, how do you smell to God today? Miles Davis, two shows from Japan 1964

In July 1964, Miles Davis played three shows in Japan. This is the first and third shows. The second show was released as Miles In Tokyo. Saxophonist Sam Rivers only played with Miles Davis for a short time in 1964. Most fans remember him from the Miles In Tokyo album. So here is another two sets from that Japan tour. I read a lot of peoples views on Sam Rivers with Miles and well. . . . it's all just opinion and speculation. In my opinion Miles needed some one to fill the void when Coleman left, and Miles said he wanted Wayne Shorter but he was not available at the time. So you have opportunity for Sam Rivers. You can make your own judgment if he made the best of the opportunity.

Shawn Lane (1963-2003) had insisted that he record what would become "Powers Of Ten" by himself and his label agreed, so armed with
a sizable equipment budget he purchased an entire multitrack recording set up (in the pre ProTools days) and sometime in 1990
installed himself in the conference room of Memphis' Kiva Studios. What you hear are preliminary mixes of compositions that would
make up the bulk of "Powers Of Ten", plus one track from Shawn's other solo studio effort, "The Tri-Tone Fascination". Several
tracks' titles were unknown by your humble servant as they didn't make commercial release, these tracks are interesting in that
context as they represent musical directions Shawn himself felt for whatever reason didn't merit a public audience. Also included
are snippets of Shawn playing solos of various styles, showing his enormous diversity of musicianship. Lastly included is
"Stratosphere II", an unaccompanied solo piece he had recorded for Shrapnel Records' (long out of print) compilation "US Metal
Volume IV".

Bob Dylan, Town Hall, New York, NY 4-12-1963 (SBD)


There are a lot of Bob Dylan recordings in circulation and this is one that sure sounds good.  An early historic show.  Might be one of his first major concerts of note.  The story is that there were about 600 people in the audience and that was his biggest audience up to that time.  Anyway an amazing recording.

Cannonball Adderley Quintet, Two Shows From 1969 (FM) Re-Post

This is a great moment in time if you ask me. Music was changing and here is Zawinul with Adderly playing some Jazz while Miles and his bunch were turning the thing on it's head. Zawinul was in the middle of it and was able to keep it real and relevant on both fronts. The sound of this is just perfect. I have seen on the Adderley site that there is much more from this session but this is all I have found.

This second one is from four days earlier and again is a radio broadcast. This is longer and more complete but has a lot of talking between tracks. I personally put this on CD without the talking, but thats just me. This stuff just has a great feel. I really love the blues tune called Oh Babe.
