Here is a nice one from one of my old favorites, The Crusaders.  The Crusaders are a great mix of jazz, funk, and soul.  A super talented group that also played on many other artists records.

Farewell to Wilton Felder. Sad news of the Crusaders, Wilton Felder's passing yesterday

I got the news yesterday that Wilton Felder, the sax player from the Crusaders passed away.  The Crusaders were a big part of the soundtrack of my life in the 70s and 80s and still today I listen to their music.   Wilton Felder, saxophonist for the fabled Crusaders. Mr. Felder was 75.



I was lucky to see the Crusaders several times in a time I would call their peak (early to mid 1970s) and something about their music just hit me right.  Jazzy yet still with a melody.  Funky and soulful, yet with a feel of comfort and laid back blues.  Not only did Felder play in the Crusaders but he appeared on albums  by Joni Mitchell, America, Seals and Croft,  Billy Joel, Michael Franks, Tom Scott and The LA Express, Randy Newman, Joan Baez, and John Cale.  And he even collaborated with Bobby Womack and had several solo albums.  So farewell Wilton, you will be missed.  Thanks for adding the soul and cool to so many recordings.  For more about the Crusaders here is a link to some of their live recordings.  http://arizjones.blogspot.com/search/label/Crusaders

The Crusaders - 1980 BBC In Concert, UK - R.I.P. Joe Sample

Joe Sample the great keyboard player of the Crusaders died on 9-12-2014.  Joe Sample and the Crusaders have been part of my life's soundtrack.  I was blessed to see the Crusaders several times in the early 70s and have been listening to their music ever since.  They have a great sound blending jazz, soul and funk into a unique sound.  Henderson one of the other founding members of the group described the Crusaders as “We are the fathers of jazz-funk-fusion,”.  Whatever you call it, it just hits me right and I never get tired of it.  The Crusaders made over 40 albums and Sample also recorded 21 solo albums.  Sample was also a contributor on many others including some great albums by Joni Mitchell, BB King, The LA Express, Michael Franks, Anita Baker, and Marvin Gaye.  So here are a couple of live recordings, just to say R.I. P. Joe, you will be missed.

The Crusaders, Seattle 1973

I became a fan of the Crusaders in the mid 70s and was fortunate to see them at what I consider their peak. This is the best unofficial recording I could find of this exceptional band. These guys played on albums by Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan, Michael Franks, Ronnie Laws, and Tom Scott And The LA Express. They created their own soulful and funky southern style jazz fusion sound. This is a very nice recording of some extremely talented musicians.
