Grateful Dead, Amsterdam, Netherlands, 10-16-81 (SBD)

The OOPS! Concert.  This show was played on Bob Weir's birthday and was unscheduled in the middle of a Europe tour. Since there were no advance ticket sales and save for the scattered “OOPS” posters in Amsterdam’s Leidplein district, no advance notice either. It was first come, first serve at the door. Ticket price worked out to about seven bucks. 

Since most of the band’s equipment was on its way to Paris, they played borrowed instruments. Jerry sported a Strat styled Yamaha 1000 sunburst guitar and Weir, a white Fender Telecaster. 

 This show features the first Lovelight since Pig pen's death, the first Gloria since 1965, and the only Hully Gully ever played.  Not to mention an acoustic first set.  An amazing show.

Grateful Dead and New Riders and Joan Baez, 12-31-1981 (SBD)

This is my favorite New Years concert that I attended. I posted it five years ago but all the links are long since dead, so I felt it was a good one to bring back.  And this is as complete a record of the show as you will find anywhere.

        I left late at night on the 27th after my work shift and drove alone up to Oakland from Southern Cal. I went alone because some of my friends went ahead and some could only come for the New Years show. I went up without any tickets in hand and I arrived in Oakland very early on the morning of 28th and proceeded to total my car due to brake failure (poor maintenance on my part). I T-boned a Ford Pinto with my 74 Toyota Corolla several blocks away from the Oakland Auditorium. Luckily no one was hurt so left my car in a yellow zone and walk to the Auditorium. When I arrived the people who were cleaning up the Auditorium from the show the night before were coming out of the building. A nice guy named Ray Augustine that I had met through mutual friends came out and proceeded to give me a ticket for that nights show. Things started looking up. Soon I found my friends dog Althea and followed it to my friend Rob's tent in the park. We salvaged what we could from my car and then went to the show that night. I slept in a tent the rest of my stay in the park right in front of the Oakland Auditorium. And it rained and rained. The 29th was a day between shows and I went back to were my car was and it had not been towed. So I had it towed to a junk yard. The 30th I again was able to get a ticket and saw the show (great first set). On the 31st it was raining a lot and I had no tickets and had five friends who came up without tickets. I bought a ticket to the BART train and hung out in the station and found six tickets at face value from Dead Heads as they came off the trains. So I was in and my friends were too. We entered the building as early as we could to get out of the rain. The New Riders were an opening act and as I remember they had some other things to keep us entertained like jugglers and such. When you listen to the new riders show you will hear them state that it was still four hours until midnight. Joan Baez came out and did some solo acoustic tunes and then one by one the Grateful Dead joined her. First the drummers for a Arabic new years song and then Bob Weir on Acoustic guitar. When Jerry came out he picked up and acoustic guitar and started to strum it and nothing came out. He looked upset and proceeded to pick up his electric guitar. So the acoustic set did not appear to turn out as planned. Then there was a long set break and then the real show started with a fantastic first set full of treats like one of the first Big Boss Man's played since 1972, and special guest Matt Kelly on harmonica as well as another appearance of Joan Baez. As new years eave approached Ken Kesey came down on a cable from the ceiling and was hanging above the stage standing on a cable that went off horizontally into the rafters. he talked about the old days and lead the whole crowd in a mass hyperventilation, and then the countdown. At twelve Bill Graham wearing an skeleton mask and dressed as Uncle Sam rode a giant joint down to the stage and the band started their second electric set with Iko Iko. After this there was another set break and then band came out and played the first Dark Star since January of 1979 (and they would only play one more in he next eight years). The show ended with Jerry and Joan Baez singing All Over Baby Blue, and they told us to stick around for breakfast. I left the building as the sun was coming up and started the new years without a car and needing a ride home but still happy as ever. This was not the best performance ever.  Sure there are flaws. But it was a great time and one I won't forget. The cover artwork I drew myself back in the day (an Arizona Jones original).

The Allman Brothers and The Grateful Dead, RFK Stadium, 6-09-1973 and 6-10-73 (SBD)

The Grateful Dead and the Allman Brothers Band got together for two days at RFK Stadium in Washington D.C. in 1973.  It was a huge event with around 80,000 people in attendance. 

  The show had opening acts Doug Sahm for the first day and Wet Willie for the second.  The Allman Brother closed the first day and the Grateful Dead closed the second.  Both band played very long set lists making the second show extend well past midnight.  The shows used GD's prototype Wall of Sound with a stereo PA System with JBL speakers inside Alembic cabinets plus a stereo Auxiliary PA.  Truly an historic event and we have all of the Grateful Dead and Allman Brothers music for you in nice soundboard quality.

Grateful Dead, Oakland, CA, 9-12-1985 (sbd)

 

This is a nice soundboard recording of The Grateful Dead during their run in Oakland in September of 1985.  The shows were billed as the anniversary of the acid test shows and there was a great liquid light display light show on the screen behind the stage.  I was at these shows.  I traveled up from Southern California alone and with a bunch of screen print t-shirts in hand.  I stayed with a girl that lived in Berkeley I had met at the Greek shows earlier in the year.  A great time.  This show had the last Helps on The Way until the Hampton shows in 1989.

This one is often considered one of the greatest shows of all time.  I'll let you decide for yourself.  But the popularity my be because it was widely circulated and the recording quality is amazing.  There is no doubt that it is great, but greatest of all?  Hard to say.

Grateful Dead, Boston Music Hall 12-01-1973 (SBD)

This is a beautiful recording from the Grateful Dead during a time when they played some of their most inspired shows.  This fills in the show that was missing from the Dicks Pick #14 that has the show before and after this one.  Garcia has a beautiful guitar tone during this time period, and the playing is inspired.

Grateful Dead, Port Cester, NY 2-18-1971 (SBD)

This is a historic show with the first public performance of Bertha, Loser, Greatest Story, Wharf Rat, and Playin In The Band.  The most notable is Wharf Rat sandwiched in the middle of Dark Star.  This alone would make this a must have, but the show has so much more.  A nice recording as well.

Grateful Dead, Warfield Theatre, San Francisco, CA, Acoustic, October 1980 (SBD)

In 1980 the Grateful Dead decided to do an album of live acoustic music.  So they played 25 shows where they played and acoustic first set.  They did fifteen shows at the Warfield in San Francisco two in New Orleans and then eight shows at Radio City Music Hall in New York.  From these shows they produced a double album of acoustic music called Reckoning.  They had not really played acoustic sets for ten years prior to this and they really only played a few acoustic shows after this, so this was a real rare treat.  Every night they closed the acoustic set with Ripple.  Before this they had not played Ripple since 1971.  Along with that these shows brought back Bird Song and to Lay Me Down and several others that had not been played in years.  So here are some live acoustic recordings form the Warfield shows.  I call this the Alternative Reckoning. I personally really love these acoustic shows.  I hope you enjoy them as well.

Grateful Dead, The Greek Theater, Berkeley, CA. Three shows May 1982 (SBD)

This is one of my favorite run of Grateful Dead shows I attended.  And I saw a lot of shows (over 150).  The run of shows was super well played and these are great soundboard recordings of the event.  It was my first time seeing the Grateful Dead at the Greek Theater.  Seeing them at the Greek was special.  The Greek was home turf and as such the shows have a special feel and attention to detail.  This one had an incredible Courtenay Pollock tie-dye stage backdrop.  This is well worth a listen from start to finish.  Powerful stuff.

Day one, the Friday eve show.  Just a warm up?  Hardly!  This Playin > Uncle Johns Band is fantastic.  The second set is one continual non-stop jam.  Otis the band's dog running out on the stage during intense jams.  Wavy Gravy during the break telling us to all protest against the Diablo Canyon Nuke Reactor (Grateful not Nuclear Dead).  The set list may not impress but it is how it is played not what was played on this one.  Short but sweet!

The big finale!  Shakedown Street opens the show.  A strong Scarlet-> Fire.  Motorcycle sound effects in drums, one of the only two Casey Jones played that year.  Satisfaction -> Brokendown Palace encore as a send off.

Grateful Dead, The Frost, 10-10-1982 (SBD)

This is the last music I will be posting. So I decided to give you one of my old favorites. This Grateful Dead show has special feel to it. The second set just flows from song to song. And the set list is great. This is some of the earliest examples of Throwing Stones and Touch Of Grey. If fact this is the first time the band linked Throwing Stones to Not Fade Away, something that would be a part of set lists for years after this. Crazy Fingers had only been brought back into the rotation earlier in the summer making it special for the Bay Area fans. All the songs are played well and it ends with a great double encore of the Rolling Stones song Satisfaction and then It's All Over Baby Blue. And it is all over sorry to say. Thanks for being a part of it.

Grateful Dead, Three Shows, Fall of 1991

This one goes out to my friend Mark from Sedona. One of the people I know that saw more GD shows than me. Mark just received an "all clear" from his doctor after battling phase 3 testicular cancer. So instead of a memorial we get to have him around for a bit longer. Well these shows are about loss and a memorial. But at the same time remembering a great life.
These shows are important and special because they follow the untimely death of Grateful Dead friend and famous concert promoter, Bill Graham, who died on 10-25-91 in a helicopter
accident. Flying in weather reported as low overcast, rain and gusty winds, the
aircraft flew directly into a 223-foot high-voltage tower along Hwy 37, which runs
between Vallejo and Marin County. Also killed in the crash was pilot Steve Kahn and
Graham's girlfriend, Melissa Gold. The already scheduled shows at Oakland Arena became a "public" wake for the loss. The stage the night of 10-27-91 revealed large beautiful funeral wreaths made of roses dedicated to Bill (Bills had a picture of him in the middle), his girlfriend and the pilot. The wreaths remained all week and continued on to Golden Gate Park. At these shows the Grateful Dead celebrated Bill's life through music bringing back Mona which had not been played since 3-25-72.
Many friends and family attended these shows to honor Bill so of course the musical talent back stage was great. Bruce Hornsby was already touring with the band at this time and Carlos Santana and Gary Duncan joined the GD during the Oakland shows. It was a week long party which began at Oakand and ended with the history making free concert "Laughter, Love & Music" in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, CA. The free concert in San francisco was an all day event with an estimated 300,000 people and a wide assortment of bands. The Grateful Dead set had John Fogerty, Neil Young, and John Popper as guests. Of course Ken Kesey a friend of Bill's and the band had to be a part of the send off for Bill. So at the Halloween show Kesey stepped out and gave a eulogy for Bill during one of the most heavy moments of jamming I have ever heard by any band. This for me marks the end of an era. And I consider the 10-31-1991 show to be one of the last great moments for the Grateful Dead.
